Black Crowes Ramble Up A New Album

The Black Crowes ended an extremely busy and successful 2008 with a bang in San Francisco last night. Chris and Rich Robinson’s band of brothers finished a five show stand at the Fillmore Auditorium with a three song encore featuring legendary bassist Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead. Most accomplished bands would take a rest after performing 138 shows in ten months, but the Crowes are already plotting their next big move.

The jam-rock sextet have invited their fans to Levon Helm’s Barn in Woodstock, NY on February 21, 22, 28 and March 1 to watch them perform a batch of new material that will be recorded live for their next album over the course of the four evenings. Tickets are currently available for $150 – the same price Helm normally charges for his Midnight Ramble sessions at his barn. As you can imagine taping isn’t allowed at these shows.

Levon isn’t scheduled to join the band, but you never know… especially after last night’s Phil Lesh sit-in. Lesh joined the band for Sugaree, Cold Rain and Snow and New Speedway Boogie at the legendary venue with Crowes’ bassist Sven Pipien moving over to acoustic guitar for the Dead covers. Crowes fans were also treated to the band’s first performance of Dave Mason’s Feelin’ Alright since a Furthur Festival ’97 tour stop in Tinley Park, IL. Also busted out over the course of the five shows in San Fran were Title Song (last played 8/4/06) and Bewildered (7/18/93) on Friday night plus Exit (8/25/95) on Thursday. NMAS guitarist Luther Dickinson’s addition has clearly revitalized the Crowes, who have continued to raise their game throughout the year.
