The B List: Best New Year’s Shows

2. 12/30/97 – Allow me to wax poetic on this show: In 1995 I met Chris Kuroda outside of the Wetlands, where moe. was playing. He was kind enough to indulge me in a game of 20 questions, and one song I asked about was Sneakin’ Sally Through The Alley. Chris told me the band hated the vocal jam at the end of the song and therefore would probably never play it again.

I walked into Madison Square Garden a minute before the show started on December 30th, and my friends and I got to our seats when the opening chords of Sneakin’ Sally rang out. I thought about that conversation and was pleased when, instead of ending the song with a vocal jam, the boys let their instruments do the talking with a great 10-minute jam that led into Taste.

Ticket

That night was the first time in more than eight years that the band played Sneakin’ Sally, and incredibly the show actually got better from that point. The second set included my favorite collaboration with Tom Marshall, when he and Trey sang The Proclaimers’ 500 Miles in the middle of Harpua. The 30th was one of the few times in which the band truly kept me guessing at every moment. It’s not every show that Harry Hood gets jammed into My Soul. I hate that fucking song, but on this night I was just psyched the band was trying something so totally different. I thought the show was gonna end at that point, but the band played on. Trey even discussed that they had blown the curfew and were just going to play an encore without the leaving the stage.

The band walked off and the high fives started flying. I organized my friends and we started to plot our way home. Just then the lights went out again and Phish returned to the stage once again. We were expecting a quick song as a thank you, but instead Phish played an unheard of four-song encore. They finished the night where they began, playing a quick reprise of Sneakin’ Sally before the closing Frankenstein. It doesn’t get much better than walking out of the Garden at 1 am, knowing a three-set extravaganza was mere hours away.

1. Big Cypress – Big Cypress ruins every “Best Phish Show” list I’ve ever made — nothing compares to the three nights I spent on Chief Jim Billie’s swamp in Florida. Bustouts? Amazing jams? Longest two sets the band ever played? Warm clear weather? Witty banter that had people saying Cheesecake for the next two years? Check. All check. Big Cypress was the peak of the Phish fan experience. I could go on for hours about Biggie Cypes, but we have plenty of time for that next year with the release of the Big Cypress DVD box set*.

*With “Crosseyed and Painless” jam. ^Unfinished. #Very little Jimmy/Posternutbag comment; instead, Trey’s life-changing experience in the 4th grade (1974, 10 years old): sitting, eating french toast and watching “Lost in Space” (a Saturday morning ritual) Trey realized that Will Robinson and the robot were in the same field as the one behind his school and were sending him telepathic messages, which led to him to collect food and bring it to that field, where he found a pentagram, placed the food and saw his own future, including the band and a figure in white singing (Tom Marshall) though he knew neither. @Proclaimer’s cover (from the “Benny and Joon” soundtrack); Tom Marshall on vocals. %With lights down and a glow stick war, and also unfinished. $Before “Guyute,” Trey explains that they don’t know if they have enough time for one more song, but that there’s one more he wants to play…he said they would not encore. After Guyute, the lights did not go on. Page, Mike, and Fish returned to the stage. Finally, Trey came on and the encore started. &Trey has “Toph” (Chris Kuroda) bring the lights down and re-starts the glow stick war during a delay jam which featured he and Fish in some sort of dance ritual at the front of the stage, Fish on vacuum, and then finally just Mike’s bass and Trey’s guitar loop before finishing Frankenstein.

Set 2 was played from midnight to sunrise, non-stop. +With marshmallow war, lots of balloons, and aerial tortillas. *With Fish on vacuum. **Unfinished. ***First time played; J.J. Cale cover from the album “Naturally” (best known for the Eric Clapton version). #Set begins around 11:35 pm with Father Time on stage pedaling away at a stationary bike, powering a large clock, with the sound of the gears on the PA (possibly a Siket Disc track?). At approximately 11:50 pm, Father Time collapses from exhaustion and the clock stops. At this time, with appropriate sound effects, a large fan boat entered the field from halfway back, stage right. Soon the sides and top of the fan boat were blown off to reveal the band riding in the hot dog from 12-31-94. The hot dog approached the stage as the band threw leis and other goodies into the crowd. Once the hot dog reached the stage, the band disembarked carrying several meatsticks. They fed these to Father Time, reviving him to drive to clock to midnight. ^Instrumental version, with the band picking up the song from a pre-recorded version played during the hot dog ride. ^^With vocal jam, as Trey, Mike, and Page sang the notes as they played them. ^^^Recorded live for ABC’s Millennium coverage; Trey instructed the crowd to chant the word “Cheesecake” after the song (instead of applauding), in an attempt to confuse TV viewers; Trey introduced the band for the recorded footage and offered a message of peace and harmony for the world (“The right lane is for driving. The left lane is for passing. So stay in the right lane unless you’re passing.”). ^^^^Preceded by “Meatstick” tease (possibly as Central Time hit midnight). %With “Cheesecake” vocal jam. %%Trey solo acoustic. %%%With Mike holding up a voice box, repeating the phrase “Quadrophonic Toppling.” %%%%With Fish on vacuum; Fish introduced Page before the song, and Mike and Trey afterwards, and the band as “Phish 2000.” $Preceded by a tease of the “Harry Hood” intro. $$No encore; post-show music was the Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun.”

  1. Thanks for giving me the willies for a sec with the Big Cyp DVD box set annoucement. I mean come on already. Are they waiting till they unearth that time capsule out there to release it?
We should all agree that Big Cypress shouldn’t even count as a Phish show anymore. It’s just not fair to the other shows.

I wasn’t at 12-30-97, but it is one of my favorite shows to listen to.

    HAPPY NEW YEARS ALL!!!!

  2. i eat cheeeeeeeesecake……………….in the port-a-let

not an easy list to make: 12-31-93, 12-31-95, 12-31-97, 12-31-02 (that’s right i went there) 12-29-03, 12-30-03 …lots of shows left on the sidelines.

  3. And let us not forget the surround sound speakers in the civic center for the 12/29/94 show.

not only was that bowie EVIL, but it was evil up front, evil behind, and evil all around me. there was a moment when most of the crowd sat down… no no! they weren’t bored or listless, or even tired….. they were scared.
this show officially convinced me to start going on tour.

  6. *sigh* I’m a post-hiatus nOOb who only made it to 5 shows and who never got to go to a NYE run (lack of funds). However, 6/20/04 at SPAC was an amazing night for me and if that show even hinted at what Phish were like in their prime (1993-1997 for me), then woah, you are some lucky people to have heard them in their prime.

Yes, that 12/29/94 Bowie is amazing, but I think the one from 11/26/94 (the same show the Slave from “A Live One” was recorded at) is even better: it’s longer, but somehow tighter, more focused and just as crazy in parts (Trey megaphone feedback jam anyone?). Check it out.

*sigh* I miss Phish, though I’m torn about whether I want them to come back. I don’t see how they can get the magic of the 90’s back, so maybe it’s best they let it lie.

  7. Nice list.

Since your list doesn’t go back that far, I’ll have to list all the 93 shows for you. Phenomenal week of music, crazy blizzards… 12/30/93 will always be a very, very special show for me, although in retrospect, they were all pretty sweet.

  8. Scotty,

All in all great list. But I think you undervalued 12/28/96. Maze was amazing, the energy in the spectrum was nuttastic. TMWSIY was bueatiful. I could go on….

  9. great post! Loved reading it 🙂 I hate ranking Phish shows, but if I did, we’d have to work things out over many beers and joints 😉

  10. is this list for serious? no list of all-time great new years run shows is complete without BOTH 12/30/93 AND 12/31/93. no way. put them on the same line if you have to. my list probably looks like this (cypress excluded):

    5. 12/29/95
    4. 12/29/97
    3. 12/29/94
    2. 12/31/95
    1. 12/30-31/93

  11. I thought I made it pretty clear I missed ’93 and only wanted to rank the shows I went to. If I did go to ’93, I’d imagine 12/28, 12/30 and 12/31 would all be near the top.

    12/28/93 is horribly underrated.
