Tell me if you’ve heard this one before – band hunkers down in a cabin during the bleak winter months to record and emerges with an album chocked full of gorgeously haunting Americana that they self-release, but earns enough buzz to be reissued by an indie-label. Sounds a lot like Bon Iver, but this year it belongs to the Providence-based folk-rock act The Low Anthem.
Just swap out rural-Wisconsin, for the deserted tourist destination Block Island and Jagjaguwar for Nonesuch and you’ve got this year’s unexpected breakout success story and album Oh My God Charlie Darwin. The similarities to Justin Vernon & Co. don’t end there. While the rest of the album is a diverse mix of ramshackle folk rock, the band’s lead single sounds remarkably like a lost track from For Emma, Forever Ago, take a listen to the album’s title track from a performance at this year’s SXSW…

After making an appearance at Bonnaroo this past weekend, the band continues on their lengthy world tour with a stop at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom this evening. You won’t want to miss it.
