Last Week’s Sauce: August 16th – 22nd

Artist & Title: Benevento/Russo Duo – New Song
Date & Venue: 2009-08-17 Highline Ballroom New York, NY
Taper & Show Download: Scott Bernstein

As I mentioned above, this is another show from the Highline Ballroom’s “piano week” series, and it’s an interesting showcase of what the Benevento/Russo Duo sound like a bit stripped down. This track, titled “New Song” on the recording, is a simple little ditty that sounds like it would fit in well as a track on the 2008 Sigur Rós album Med sud I eyrum vid spilum endalaust. Good stuff. These two guys only have one future gig on the books together, and that’s playing the Bear Creek Music Festival. Joe Russo will next be seen tackling the catalog of The Grateful Dead when the band Furthur makes its debut next month in Oakland.

For their encore in Salt Lake City, Los Lobos covered this Tito Puente classic, made famous by Santana. Los Lobos play Friday night at The Atlanta Botanical Garden.

Artist & Title: Nine Inch Nails – Closer, Ruiner
Date & Venue: 2009-08-19 Red Butte Salt Lake City, UT
Taper & Show Download: NINSlave

I’m just going to quote the taper directly from etree on this one. “Second NY show on the final leg of the ‘Wave Goodbye’ tour and what a treat. Trent Reznor gave to 1500 singing, clapping, devoted fans……The classic NIN album “The Downward Spiral” played live in it’s entirety and in order for the first time ever. And if his comments are to be believed, this was the only time it will ever be played in this fashion.” The Wave Goodbye Tour continues tonight at Terminal 5 in New York City. Then it’s off to Chicago, Toronto, and Los Angeles. Supposedly, last shows ever.

Artist & Title: Widespread Panic – Chilly Water
Date & Venue: 2009-08-22 CMSAC Canandaigua, NY
Taper & Show Download: Z-Man

The last song of WSP’s set featured not only their two guitarists John Bell and Jimmy Herring, but also the two guitarists from the Allman Brothers Band: Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes. We first reported on the collaborations of the Allman Brothers Band/Widespread Panic tour on Sunday. This tour continues tonight at Bethel Woods in New York. On a personal note, ScottyB will be hitting up Thursday’s show at Jones Beach, and I’ll be checking out Saturday’s show at Great Woods.
