I would love to see “Vultures” on a studio album. It would also be nice if the band would take it off the shelf.
I would love to hear a studio version of Sleeping Monkey, with Fishman’s vocals getting a chance to shine!
*Mountains in the Mist* should be released on a studio album. I like what they do with ballads in the studio. And, it would get this tune back into the rotation.
I’d definitely love to hear a studio version of The Curtain With. It’s such an incredible song.
I would love to hear the studio version of Strange Design. Hearing a dusty cassette tape of some Billy Breathes demo sessions makes me yearn to hear Page in full form.
Destiny Unbound! This would make a great studio song.
Phish should release a version of “Destiny Unbound,” it just does a great job of respresenting the feeling of tour.
My gosh – I don’t know if this counts but I doubt it does since it was never Officially released. The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday should be OFFICIALLY RELEASED but the song I would choose to hear from the studio would be The Lizards – Hands Phreakin Down!
Agree with fluffdead, TMWSIY should be released in its entirety. Imagine the fellas take all they’ve learned over the years and put this down on tape today…hot. That being said, I vote: POSSUM.
I know NICU was one of the songs being considered for the Ghost. I would like to see this released.
I think Spock’s Brain would be a great studio tune. It would really shine with some production and over dubs.
NICU…always thought that would get some radio play for them if they released it on an album.
NICU for sure, such a great song and they could really add to it/alter it in a unique way within a studio.
i think we heard the old material so many times that evrything new would be perfect, i would go with ‘Gone’, really liked it and hoped it would make it on Joy…
Spock’s Brain would be a great tune to bring to the studio.
I always thought they should put together an epic Harry Hood in the Studio.
they could do some true justice to that song. Pretty sure all Phish releases with Hood are live, correct me if I’m wrong.
Ditto for Slave. but an EPIC studio released Hood would create permagrin so contagious that my life would look like the video for Black Hole Sun.
Would have loved to have received the gift of a studio I Saw It Again.
whoops
less than 50 words:
I always thought they should put together an epic Harry Hood in the Studio.
they could do some true justice to that song.
Ditto for Slave. but an EPIC studio released Hood would create permagrin so contagious that my life would look like the video for Black Hole Sun.
P.S. Although it was on Trampled By Lambs….on a phish album to be specific.
Spock’s Brain… a song so horrible live that it should be revised and studio-d.
Slave to the traffic light BEGS to be recorded in studio. Lots of possibility
PYITE, unless it’s on an album and i forgot? hehe i am not too familiar with the albums.
and a thousand birds were headed for the sky WHOOOAAAAA
col. forbin’s ascent. do it.
Punch you in the eye !
Would definitely love to see either Slave or Mikes–>’Paug make an album. They could do a lot in the studio with both of these.
I think a smokin Harry Hood would be fantastic- one of my faves it would be great to hear what they intend it to sound like
Strange Design. It was recorded, yes. But (a) never made the album and (b) had that ethereal, wooshy Story of the Ghost feel, which did not capture the song IMO. Redo it. Love that tune!
It would be incredible to see what the boys would do with Harry Hood in the studio. I would love to hear this as it would be an awesome tribute to one of their oldest and most played songs.
I think they should put Fuck Your Face or Dear Mrs. Reagan on a studio album… just to put something out they they will probably never play live again.
NICU would definitely be cool
I think a Halley’s comet would sound great as a studio version.
Can I get a twofer? I’d LOVE studio versions of both Vultures and Buffalo Bill
I think PYITE should be recorded in the studio. A classic phish song.
I think Carini would be pretty badass in the studio.
we totally need a halley’s commet, circa great went style, with the whole “I’m going down” vocal jam. that was funky phish. me likey funky phish
Phish should definitely release a B-sides and Rarities album of studio recordings of past songs, and to close that album, a note-perfect “Slave To The Traffic Light.”
I am a Carini lover, through and through. I know it often gets panned when played live, but I think it rocks and would love to hear a hard/metal edgy album version.
Spock’s Brain is the perfect choice to receive some studio polish.
Somantin. expertly-penned lyrics, great melody. with the right studio treatment this could have fit a slot on many a Phish album. round room or SOTG come to mind.
I can hear the roll as the intro being a great beginning to a song on a studio album, so “Possum” is my pick.
slave
nicu
suzy
carini
Vultures and Carini to start out their first HEAVY album!!
I SAW IT AGAIN
by now hailey’s should really be on an album….i mean honestly, they have been playing it for so long it needs to be on record
The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday in it’s entirety would make me soooo joyful. If I had to narrow it down, then Colonel Forbid–> Fly Famous Mockingbird. Uplifting in a way words cannot describe.
Wow, so many choices but I’d have to say The Curtain With. It’s a beautiful song both musically and lyrically.
the correct answer is
SOMANTIN
NICU would sound very cool in a studio setting and could have some cool production and layers on it.
I think I have to agree with the Carini mentions…so much you could do in the studio with a tune like that.
Halley’s comet
since I am always looking to hear the “Curtain With” live, I’ll go with that as a track I’d like to hear a studio version of.
Spock’s Brain
I would have to say after finally hearing it live this summer, I would go with Ha Ha Ha or Halley’s Comet.
I would most like to hear the whole Mikes Groove studio!
Destiny Unbound… The first time I heard that song was on Phish Live: Nassau Coliseum 2-28-03, and it instantly became one of my favorite songs. I would love to hear a studio version.
My pick is Runaway Jim… a fun tune that they do a lot with live, but would translate well to their studio sound.
Separating “The Curtain With” into two tracks would be pretty excellent.
1. The Curtain
2. With
Vultures. Been a fave since they started playing it and would have sounded great right alongside Dirt & Piper.
“Punch You In The Eye” is the best phish song currently not on a studio release.
camel walk.
Going down town to the disco, got to do it right away. Got a funky thing to get into. gonna blow my blues away. Im talkin camel walk.
Studio version of “Simple” would be very cool… especially on the vocals.
It’s gotta be Tela. Would love a nice and crispy version.
Gumbo. In fact, they should do an album of all Fishman-penned tunes.
I have always wanted to hear a Mike’s Song from the studio.
I have to go with Vultures, that should have been on Story of the Ghost IMHO.
Mike’s Song
I think they should work on a studio version of POSSUM.
We know the Wendell studios session exist and that version rocks..
Ever since 2000 i’ve been dying to hear a studio version of Jennifer Dances. Im surprised its not on Joy.
I always liked “Somanatin” from the Story of the Ghost outakes. It has a very cool, Robert Fripp-like guitar part.
I’m thinking Dog Log would be a great, fun song for them to put on an album!
definitely NICU. such a sweet song with a clever melody from trey and of course… a groovy solo from leo!
curtain with would be great, but i think a studio version of Hood would crystalize it as Phish’s greatest jam ever.
gotta be halley’s comet, one of the most known unreleased phish songs, not to mention the best!
Slave to the Traffic Light!
Sorry, that wasn’t 10 words…Slave to the Traffic Light!
spo o o ock’s brain, no doubt
I think Beauty of a Broken Heart would be a great studio song
I don’t think it should be a big jam tune. Halley’s Comet would sound nice.
I vote for Possum. What a killer track. So good on the TMWSIY collection.
I would feel good about Harry Hood if it was on a studio album!
I would feel good about Hood on a studio album!
I know it’s sacrelig, but Teal would be the tops on my list
Tube!!!!
My vote is for the fantastically titled Spock’s Brain. I hope they play it again at 8.
1. Strange Design shoulda been on BB
2. Vultures shoulda been on SOTG
3. Brother shoulda been on something (Lawn Boy?)
i’d like to hear a studio version of “The Lizards”. the whole “Gamehenge” album needs to happen. i think Phish 3.0 is the place for it be born. it would be epic as a multimedia album and likely the studio masterpiece they’ve been seeking to create.
Carini! I listened to every single live version of that song in circulation when I wrote my senior thesis, and would love a studio cut to add to that rotation.
Halley’s Comet, no doubt, maybe it will happen in the future… looking forward to it!
Mikes Groove. Done and done.
Mike’s Song into I am Hydrogen into Weekapaug Groove would be a great track to lay down in the studio.
I’m feeling nostalgic for 2003 and really think that Discern should of made the cut. The songs that make the full evolution from Trey solo acoustic, horn intros and then to Phish should be celebrated on an album.
halley’s comet without a doubt!!
Every time the band starts a set with Buried Alive you know you’re in for a rippin show. Now imagine a studio album with buried alive as track #1.
Carini. Song with great guitar riffs that could surprise many people not familiar with phish.
the sloth…..strong bass, and smart production could result in a speaker blaster!
Halley’s Comet is a no-brainer. One of my fave songs to hear live so I’d love to hear a studio version
Buffalo Bill should have been put on an album. Who doesn’t love that song?
Release the camels! Camel Walk would be great to hear on an album.
Punch You In the Eye. I was skeptical about a Guyute studio version before it came out, but it raged. I am sure they could do the same with PYITE.
Harry Hood has the potential to really shine in the studio – especially the ‘feel good’ vocal harmonies in the blowout ending.
I never met a man I could not forget as much as
GUY FORGET!
I was always surprised that Vultures did not make it onto SOTG. Slave would sound nice as well in the studio.
Famous Mocking Bird. It’s got all the elements of Phish I love.
JOY
Sleeping Monkey
the thesis that you’re writing is a load of shit.
but i’m glad you finally finished it.
-carini
headphones jam should have been an album
Anything from the Gamehenge story or even the entire Gamehenge story; ‘cuz the lizards, they have died.
I wish Lizards would make it onto a studio recording. Although, the song is so good live that I can’t imagine it being much better on a record.
I would love to see Glide II reworked for a studio album. It is such a simple and poignant song.
Carini. Easy choice, a nice rock song with hard guitar and a great lick that would hook a ton of people who may not listen to phish in the first place.
Down with Disease Reprise
I always wanted to hear a studio version of Slave to the Traffic Light
Alaska
I CANT BELIEVE ITS NOT ON JOY
I would have loved to hear Paul and Silas…it’s phish’s best bluegrass song IMO and would’ve been great on any album.
sneakin’ sally through the alley, because if it made it’s way onto an album, we might actually hear it more often.
timber ho! always loved this one!
Harry…HOOD! not quite sure why it never made it up there, but it probably would have lost some luster in the studio.
Makisupa Policeman is a fun one, love to hear it live, but it’s album worthy.
Col. Forbin. Any Gamehenge, or all of Gamehenge.
Gumbo
Walfredo, as it’s quintessential Phish and exemplifies the band’s ability to rotate instruments.
I’ve always thought that Punch you in the Eye would have been a great studio track
The Lizards or the rest of gamehendge…they should just make a complete gamehendge album while we’re at it
I’d be interested to hear a Hood on a studio disc. It would just be really interesting to see where they took it. And I’d love to see if they added the “Hood” chant.
Ohhhhh…Possum?
Vultures. Love the song. Should have been released. Should still be played!
Phish needs to put TELA on an album. we all know every rock band has to squeeze a ballad onto their album, so Phish should put their best ballad on an album – TELA
Cooooolonel forbin stared up at the mountain… Although, I’ve got the trey dorm studio version which is very nice, I like.
By far the best song that is not on an album but worthy of studio tweaking is Jerry (Timber Ho!)
Carini is a close second
I’ll go with Tube. long or short, this song always packs a punch. it was on the bearsville outtakes, so they did play it in the studio…just never got released.
Vultures is my vote. Great song, and it would have fit nicely onto Ghost.
The Gamehedge songs should all be put on a compilation album that tells about the book and the story of gamehedge, most specifically I would love to hear Forbins>Mockingbird
Perfecting the massive sound of Carini in the studio would be tasty
I would Love to hear Slave or Hood in studio. Just want to see if they could capture that NRG.
Sneakin Sally!!!!
Harry Hood would make an absolutely epic studio track. Runaway Jim would also be a great song to hear on an album.
I’d love to see Gamehenge released..could have a nice little companion book explaining it all
I would love to hear Possum on a studio album. What a badass song.
Need to hear how they would release a polished version of TUBE. The funk with bring the roof down!
I’d think if it wasn’t so random, I’d say Carini would make a great album opener, but now I’m thinking a Halley’s Comet with a sick guitar solo leading up to a drop off that automatically overloads your listening device to drop into to a new random song as you would hear in concert!
Tube, hands down. didn’t realize that was my favorite song until coventry and that was the song i wanted to hear one more time.
NICU has always been a favorite of mine. If they did it right, it could be among the best stduio tracks ever.
I give my vote to Tube or NICU, not Hood.
Tube was the first that came to mind…2nd vote goes to The Curtain
There are many classics not on albums, but I vote for the Curtain (with), an early epic that should have been on Junta!
I would really be interested in hearing a studio version of Harpua. I think the harmonies would be absolutely incredible.
Spock’s Brain. Always a cool song. Wish they would bring that one back into the rotation.
being a drummer, “Vultures”
Curtain with would be a great studio song that might take off perfectly with some tracking.
Would love to see Harry Hood get the studio treatment. They could go so many directions with the jam, studio could be awesome for really delicate slow build or way spacey.
I agree with some others that Vultures should be recorded in studio.
Destiny Unbound
Tube needs to presented with all the gifts inherent to the studio recording process
Vulture is definitely the right answer. One of the better Phish songs, and it remains unreleased.
I gotta go with Possum…Possum…Possum…POSSUM! Such a good straight forward rocker…perfect for the studio. They would just annihilate it.
Timber Ho, great energy, would love to see a cleaned up version from the studio
harry HOOD with a studio jam along the same lines as the reba studio jam.
I agree with the others who said Vultures. It’s a great song and reminds me of Kurt Vonnegut’s “Slaughterhouse-Five.”
Punch You in the Eye. There’s been rumors for ever that it was on the next one. It’s a freakin’ stable. Do it already. Hey!
jennifer dances (ha ha ha ha). But serisiosly I think that the “what the use?” could really shine in the studio.
Call it slightly-kinky, but I’ve always thought a RIPPIN studio version of NICU needs to be committed to celluloid, or else: what are we to do? Just listen to 89.1 WEMU’s Brazilian Fantasy show over and over to get a dance party started??? Studio NICU changes that!
I think they should cut a studio version of Camel Walk – slinky, funky, fun.
Gosh there are so many. But I’d go with Carini.
Tube!!! Trey sprays out lyrics in a machine gun rap that leads into a sinster Page vs. Gordo phunk session! So stupendous, living in this Tube…
It would be cool to have a mikes’s groove studio version.
Carini.
I would love to hear AC/DC Bag, the White Tape version does not do it justice.
Harry Hood! The ALO version was a huge staple of my early Phish days, and I’d love to hear it reinterpreted in the studio, I think the relatively sparse composed sections would be great for a little studio magic.
Tube. A Nice short sweet little tasty funky tube.
I have to go with Tube. It could never be the same as a live version, but I would love to hear it drop in full studio brilliance.
Haley’s Comet. I LOVE THAT SONG. Its all about the deep choop
Possum
First one to come to mind for me was Possum. Sounds too much like Skynyrd’s Swamp Music, but I’d like a prefected studio version nonetheless.
I would love to hear Phish release NICU on a studio album. It’s one of my favorite tunes.
I am still disappointed that we did not get a Camel Walk on this most recent tour, but if they were to release this track as a studio cut it would just be pure funk!!!
Possum. One of the first songs that I couldn’t get enough of.
Runaway Jim. You can never go wrong with “Runaway Jim”.
It is hard to pick a unreleased song to be on a new album since I only want new songs on new albums. One exception is Glide II or “Flip” This song could be re-recorded and fit somewhere on some album in the future.
I would choose Tube. It is a difficult song to play and could be done perfectly in a studio. The dissonance that Trey creates and that beat would be perfected in a studio version.
Phish should release Runaway Jim. It’s such a classic and it deserves the studio treatment.
I agree with “Timber Ho”. And it would be interesting to hear “Brother” on record.
I would love to hear Page’s voice crystal clear mastered on “TELA”…the wind from beyond the mountains… : )
Mike’s>Hydrogen>Weekapaug. Such classic tunes that need to stick together. Would love to hear a studio version maybe as a EP.
I Saw It Again
I will have to go with “Possum”, for it is the 4th most played song (31% of shows), and has been kicking around live shows since 1985. If you need additional convincing, I will challenge you to find a version EVER which is not rocking…
i was gonna say Vultures, but then I thought Gumbo. That needs to be on a studio album for sure.
i would love to hear PYITE on a studio album. It is one of my favorite songs. Interested to hesr what a studio version would sound like.
There’s a lot I’d like to see, but to start with, The Sloth.
Harry Hood would be great! I love the sound of Mike’s bass in that song. It would be interesting to see what they do with it, although I think its an awesome live one.
Haley’s Comet!
Party Time.
wow somehow i managed to miss question 4, thanks for recapping. Phish should officially release Halleys Comet. “It’s kind of like rainbows and lots of spaghetti”.
Wow, I don’t know any of their unreleased songs. I guess they should release “Glory Days” that they did with Bruce Springsteen at Bonnaroo this past summer. I know it’s not one of their songs but they did a good job with it.
