Japandroids: Post-Nothing

[rating=3.50]

Post-Nothing, with its simple cover and clever hooks, lulls the listener into a sense of security before kicking said listener right in the ass. “Will we, find our way back home?!?!” is not just a chorus; it’s a mission.  There’s no new ground being broken here but their garage/new wave-y vibe feels fresh.  The best songs arrive early in the form of “The Boys Are Leaving Town” and “Young Hearts Spark Fire”, and they are simply exhilarating; drama over riffs and crashes.

As the disk progresses there are flourishes of dance (“Heart Sweats”) and metal (“Crazy/Forever”), yet all styles would benefit if a bass was involved as cymbals and treble wash away into the ether.  Brian King and David Prowse have talent, feelings and a knack for writing a catchy tune, but I am not sure if these songs (besides the first two) will stick to your ribs when all is said and done.
