Last week, PBS aired the latest installment of their fantastic biography series American Masters which focused on the ever too brief life and career of soul music legend Sam Cooke. Cooke, who paved the way for the likes of Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin, charted an astounding 29 Top Forty hits from 1957 to 1964 – which included A Change Is Gonna Come, What A Wonderful World and You Send Me – and was also one of the first African-American artists to be embraced wholeheartedly by white audiences.
The episode ,which is entitled Crossing Over, was over twelve years in the making and features an impressive array of celebrities from Smokey Robinson and James Brown to Muhammad Ali and Dick Clark reflecting on Cooke’s impact on music and society.
