GOTV ’10 = Weekend of the Living Dead

Back in May ’96, before Phish’s Clifford Ball – which is often credited as a pre-cursor to the current festival explosion, Deadhead Heaven brought a variety of Dead-inspired bands from the Northeast including moe., Strangefolk, Ominous Seapods and the Zen Tricksters to SUNY Purchase for a two-day festival to honor the memory of Jerry Garcia. Fifteen events later, the Gathering of the Vibes – the name changed in year two – continues to be held ever year and continues to be Dead-centric as GOTV ’10 now features every living full-time member of the Grateful Dead since 1971 with the addition of Furthur to the bill as the Friday, July 30, headliner.

Furthur leaders Bob Weir and Phil Lesh join Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, who will be playing with their Rhythm Devils project on Saturday, July 31, plus Donna Godchaux, who takes the stage with her band on Thursday, July 29.  If that’s not enough Dead-related acts, usual Vibes suspects the Dark Star Orchestra, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Jackie Greene and David Gans will all be heading to Seaside Park in Bridgeport, CT on July 29 – August 1 for GOTV ’10.  To add a little balance to the noodle-heavy bill, the lineup also includes Primus, Mix Master Mike, Damian Marley & Nas and Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings. Tickets for the four-day event currently run $197.50. Let’s hope Bruce Hornsby and Tom Constanten get added next.
