moe. Ditches Setlist and Suits

You’d think bands who improvise such as Phish, moe. and Umphrey’s would feel comfortable taking the stage without a setlist, but that rarely happens. Just because these groups like to jam doesn’t mean they want to perform without planning out what they’ll be playing that night. On Tuesday at the tiny Waterhole Music Lounge in Saranac Lake, NY, moe. went sans setlist for the crowd of about 300 leading to one of their best shows of the year.

The members of moe. have been celebrating their 20th Anniversary in 2010 and as such they’ve gone formal by wearing suits at all of their two set gigs. Not only did they ditch the setlist at Saranac Lake, but they also ditched the suits. This suit-less, pre-planned setlist-less concert was described as a “round-robin” affair in which the group agree on the opening song then each member has a turn in morphing the jam into the next tune of his choice.

Take a look at what wound up going down…

6/29/10—Waterhole Music Lounge, Saranac Lake, NY

Set One:
head. -> Kyle’s Song -> meat. -> Y.O.Y. -> Time Ed -> head.

Set Two:
Puebla -> Tailspin -> St. Augustine -> 32 Things -> Don’t Fuck With Flo -> Buster

Encore:
Awesome Gary

Obviously each song was jammed out with Meat clocking in at 30 minutes. We can’t wait to hear this one for ourselves, so we’ll update this post with a link to the audio when it turns up on the Live Music Archive. moe. will perform at the Hampton Beach Casino tonight before heading to Oxford, ME for a set at Nateva on Friday. 1. sick! What a setlist and so happy they decided to throw down like this. the only typical about this is that only 300 intimate guests got a chance to see it live. Great stuff. post that Aud. ASAP Scotty B.!

  2. I hope the soundboards are put up on livedownloads.com. This sounds like a show that needs to be in every moe.ron’s library.
