Friday Mix Tape: 2010 Favorite Songs So Far

Admittedly, it feels like an awfully quiet year thus far for finding new music that really strikes a chord. I know that generally means you’re just not looking hard enough, so maybe it’s time to step it up, but who knows? There’s always Ron Artest. Anyways, it hasn’t been a complete wash, so for this week’s Friday Mix Tape, I thought I’d highlight just a few of my favorite songs from the first six months of 2010. Keep your eyes peeled, as Jeff will have his annual Top Six Albums of the First Six Months coming soon, but for now check out these tunes for some new ideas.

First, we have my favorite song off probably my favorite album so far this year, Breakneck Speed, from the Tokyo Police Club’s Champ. From there, we hit on one that’s a perfect cheer for the Spaniards in their big World Cup weekend, King of Spain, from my second favorite album of the year by the ever-delusional Tallest Man on Earth, The Wild Hunt. Next, it’s American Troglodyte from the clever, yet strange, Here Lies Love by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim and a trance tune from Delorean’s Subiza (Stay Close) that keeps getting stuck in my head. Finally, we bring it home with a couple of the best tracks off the Magnetic Fields’ Realism (You Must Be Out of Your Mind) and Dr. Dog’s Shame Shame (Shadow People).

  1. Funny I think this year has been fantastic for new tunes, certainly better then the last few IMO. Love the Shadow People pick, I would toss on Neighbor by Band of Horses, Too Afraid to Love You, Black Keys, Shutter Bug by Big Boi, and the “new” version of Loving Cup the Stones unearthed for Exile….

  2. Thanks for the suggestions! I’ve definitely been meaning to get into the new Band of Horses album. I listened to them through a barrier at their AOL Grand Central performance on my way home from work for a few songs the other day and they sounded great, even though the jerks wouldn’t let me in.
