God Street Wednesdays: An Epiphany

We’re four days removed from the first two shows of the God Street Wine reunion and I’m still sporting a smile as wide as Montana. Not only did I get to see one of my favorite bands of all-time play two killer shows for the first time in nearly 11 years, but I’ve got two more heaping helpings of GSW in front of me on Friday and Saturday. Despite my big talk in the first installment of God Street Wednesdays 17 months ago, I never thought I’d write one of these columns smack dab in the middle of a run of four God Street gigs.

It’s tough to see a band you love break up with no chance of a return in sight. This quintet gave me – and obviously tons of other Winos – many special nights in the ’90s and the thought of not ever getting to see these five guys play these songs ever again was painful. GSW fans have waited patiently for our moment and now that it arrived, we aren’t taking it for granted. With that in mind check out the HT premiere of Epiphany from last Saturday night’s show featuring video shot, edited and synced by Mike Wren and soundboard audio recorded by Eric Budke…

God Street Wine – Epiphany (Live at Gramercy ’10)

Looking ahead at this weekend’s Irving Plaza GSW shows, there’s a whole host of originals and covers that weren’t performed at the Gramercy.

My Top Ten Most Wanted are…

10. Into The Mystic
9. Hammer and a Spike
8. The Ballroom
7. Get On The Train
6. Upside Down & Inside Out
5. Water
4. Epilog
3. Dig A Pony
2. Wendy
1. Bring Back The News

We’ve got one pair of tickets to Saturday’s GSW concert at Irving Plaza that our pal CC donated to us so that we could find a good home for the ducats. If you are 100% able to go on Saturday, leave us a comment detailing the God Street Wine original you’d most like to hear. Early tomorrow morning we’ll randomly pick one of the comments and give the commenter the two tickets. Don’t enter more than once and the contest closes at 11:59PM this evening (July 14). Good luck and we hope to see you at Irving.

  1. Without a doubt, Morning Cigarettes. The only time I heard this song live was when I caught GSW at Toad’s Place (I think in ’94). In 1994 I smoked cigs. The staccato guitar line in the beginning perfectly channels how I felt in the morning when I woke up. Other than that, this song is essential GSW for me- great interplay on the vocals, the unmistakable dual guitar sound, tight instrumental component between verses, yadda, yadda, yadda.

  2. One-Armed Man, so we an hear some intense solos, and Bevo coming in strong on the parts where it all comes back together..Plus Stupid Hat was so good the other night, we gotta hear at least one more good instrumental.

  3. Scotty, IMO
(unfortunately) the Epiphany was one of the moments last weekend that didn’t stand up to past performances. Lo’s strap coming off right at the peak of the song was a let down even though Lo did a great job recovering. At one moment it look as though Lo would bail on the tune but in an instant, he powered thru- even doing his best captain morgan pose to complete it. Although I can’t make it this saturday (wedding in NJ – who the hell gets married on GSW reunion mini tour? – kidding but not really), i think the winos are waiting for: 6:15, Snake Eyes, Wonderful Westchester Women, Brooklyn, Bring Back the News, Lighthouse, Al Gore (still relevant), Feel the Pressure, Wendy, One Armed Man.

  4. Amazing shows … didn’t realize how much I missed the band (and, broken guitar or not, Epiphany was my highlight Sat night). For the upcoming weekend, if I do make it, I need me some Wendy, Don’t Tell God, 6:15 and BBTN.

  5. my wish list is def topped by:

    Vanity St
    Upside Down, Inside Out
    Epilog
Peanut butter jar (one of you rail riders, bring some freakin’ Jiffy to Irving!)

  6. i already gotz my tickets, but gotta hear:
    6:15
    bring back the news
    new eyes
what you gonna do about it
    funny kinda love
    deep drag
    morning cigs
    snake eyes

    i could go on…

  7. Forget my suggestion. The heat must be getting to my brain. Confusing GSW and Native. Oh well i’ll leave it up to someone else!

  8. Well a lot has been covered above…and since it looks like some rambling going on I will ramble as well or more, because I can use some free tickets. I missed out on the Gramercy Theater, it was sold out before I knew about it! Pissed! I’m from PA and out of the loop.

Now your asking for GSW originals but I feel one combination of covers is long over due. I started catching these guys in 1989-90

    Highlights!

caught GSW three times in 24 hrs. Lo called us out at Drexel University in Philly ( the last of the 3 shows) and dedicated Drive West to us for seeing them 3 times in 24 hrs. They played the Wetlands the night before…Then opened up for “Steel Pulse” in NJ in the afternoon (The band and us were very tired, it was noon and last nights show ended at 2am, we hung out together with the band before the show) then they played Drexel that night after the show in Jersey. Hell, Dan Pifer used to give me his ID to get into the Fore N Aft in White Plains because I was still under age. That’s loving your fans! Bring back those Thursdays! Last and final Highlight! I sung Hellfire with them at Muhlenburg College in PA. (anyone have that tape! I lost mine!) I told you I would ramble.. Anyways back to the songs…The cover combo I am referring to is

    All Blues/Call it Love

This would be a lovely opener for those who witnessed this back in the day….Namean!

For originals, there are so many, I will throw a few out there.

Crazy Iranian (someone asked for instrumental)
    Mr. Potato (freak show)
    Edgars (a classic)

Like I said a lot of good songs I want to hear were mentioned above and already played at Gramercy so I wanted to add to the list of “bust outs!”

    Kindest regards,
    Rudolff

See ya all on Friday and Saturday!

  9. Snake Eyes
    Morning Cigarettes
    Peanut Butter jar

These shows smoked! I hope they catch the bug. Would love a small wino festie in 2011…

  10. Funny Kinda Love, always been a favorite and would love to bring the hubby to see these guys. Would love an Upside Down and Inside Out too!
