Artist & Title: Agents of Good Roots – Smiling Up The Frown
Date & Venue: 2000-07-13 North Star Bar – Philadelphia, PA
Taper & Show Download: Mike B.

After starting the show with a little rant about being told they couldn’t set up their gear at the North Star Bar, Agents of Good Roots opened the show with one of their best known tunes – Smiling Up The Frown.

Billy Bragg – Way Over Yonder In The Minor Key, England, Half English
Date & Venue: 2000-07-16 Tolpuddle Martyrs’ Festival – Dorset, England
Taper & Show Download: Rich H.

Following the recent release of Mermaid Avenue Vol. II, Billy Bragg is back to writing some new songs. In between Way Over Yonder In The Minor Key, a brilliant song with words by Woody Guthrie from the first Mermaid Avenue album, and Bragg’s newest song English, Half English, Billy gets quite political on the English crowd particularly regarding the upcoming decision regarding transferring the country’s currency to the Euro – we are very interested to see how this plays out.

Artist & Title: the Disco Biscuits – Helicopters > Svenghali
Date & Venue: 2000-07-12 The Crowbar – Stage College, PA
Taper & Show Download: Max Dawson

Last year it seemed like there was just no stopping the Disco Biscuits. But as we all know, earlier this year saw the departure of bassist and founding member Marc Brownstein. The three remaining members have struggled to find a winning formula and have recently been touring with Jordan Crisman on the bass. But last week at The Crowbar, we saw the apparent return of Brownie on the bass as he joined his former bandmates on the stage for the encore and guitarist Jon Gutwillig declared, “”There is no Disco Biscuits without Marc Brownstein”. With this unpleasantness behind them, it is sure to be smooth sailing for the Disco Biscuits from now on.

Back in April as they toured without Brownie, tDB debuted a tune called Crickets that was played three times and has since been shelved. Probably a good idea, I don’t think this song was going to amount to much:

Artist & Title: Living Daylights – Electric Rosary
Date & Venue: 2000-07-13 Fox Theater – Boulder, CO
Taper & Show Download: Unknown

The Living Daylights were in Boulder last week opening up for Deep Banana Blackout. For their set-closer they welcomed additional percussionists from DBB as well as The Motet.

Phil Lesh & Friends – Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain
Date & Venue: 2000-07-16 Pine Knob Music Theatre – Clarkston, MI
Taper & Show Download: Dave Minor

It is starting to look like this “Phil Lesh & Friends” might have legs as Phil is continuing to keep extremely active on the touring scene. Phil has been touring with drummer John Molo, guitarists Robben Ford and Paul Barrere and keyboardist Bill Payne. Ford had to miss a couple of gigs last week so former Phil Friend Jimmy Herring, of Aquarium Rescue Unit and Jazz Is Dead, filled in. You know who would make a good combo for this ensemble? Herring and Warren Haynes. Haynes has joined Phil & Friends twice this year, 4/18/2000 at The Beacon in NYC and 7/3/2000 in Albuquerque.

Derek Trucks joins Jeff Pever and Jimmy Herring at a Phil & Friends gig in Mountain Aire back in May. Trucks & Haynes toured as dueling slide guitarists with Phil last year:

Artist & Title: Phish – Harry Hood > Moby Dick
Date & Venue: 2000-07-11 Deer Creek – Noblesville, IN
Taper & Show Download: blatboom

While nobody knows exactly what is happening with Phish at the end of their tour this coming fall, the word around the lot is that the band will be taking some much needed time-off. Just how long, is not very clear. In the meantime, Phish has not lost sight of their ability to be quirky as the middle show of last week’s three-night-stand at Deer Creek saw the band weaving in and out of Led Zeppelin’s Moby Dick throughout the second set as well as the first performance of Chalkdust Torture Reprise in almost six years.

Artist & Title: String Cheese Incident – Breathe > Lonesome Road Blues
Date & Venue: 2000-07-14 Horning’s Hideout – North Plains, OR
Taper & Show Download: SBD (apogee rosetta)

You can tell from the recordings that the String Cheese Incident were in awe of their surroundings as they played Horning’s Hideout in Oregon last week. This audio segment is the encore from the first of three nights and Keller Williams joins for the title track from his studio record released last year with SCI as his backing band. And they round it off with the staple Lonesome Road Blues. From what we hear, the event was a big success and we would not be surprised to see SCI do multiple nights at Horning’s for years to come.

Artist & Title: Soulive – Rudy’s Way
Date & Venue: 2000-07-13 Fan Pier – Boston, MA
Taper & Show Download: Eric McRoberts

I had the chance to head down to the under-utilized Boston waterfront on Thursday to check out Soulive. Saxophonist Sam Kinninger joined the trio for Rudy’s Way, the same tune he plays on Turn It Out, Soulive’s first full length LP that was released just two months ago.

Closing out this week’s edition we’ve got Ween with Back to Basom, a tune from their most recent studio release White Pepper.

  1. Yeah, but no YouTube back in 2000!

Or regularly accessible high-speed Internet. So how would we be streaming these tracks?

    Great job.

  2. “With this unpleasantness behind them, it is sure to be smooth sailing for the Disco Biscuits from now on.”

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
