The highly anticipated forthcoming Quentin Tarantino film The Hateful Eight just released its soundtrack list, and no surprise, it’s filled to the brim with Ennio Morricone. The famed ‘Spaghetti Western’ composer (The Good the Bad and the Ugly, along with every other song you associate with the 60’s Westerns) famously condemned the director’s use of his music in 2012’s Django Unchained, claiming to be done with their working relationship due to Tarantino’s, “[placing of] music in films without coherence.” He later took back the comments, reuniting with the eccentric director to pull together this latest work.
The soundtrack list is interesting because it gives us a peak into what will surely be close to the top of this year’s releases. In addition to Morricone’s compositions are more mainstream artists including The White Stripes, Roy Orbison, and David Hess. Bits of dialogue from the film seem to be peppered throughout the soundtrack with titles such as “This Here Is Daisy Domergue” (Jennifer Jason Leigh’s character) and “Son Of The Bloody Ni**er Killer Of Baton Rouge” (attributed to Samuel L. Jackson, Walton Goggins, Bruce Dern). The dialogue titles give enough information to intrigue audiences without giving away spoilers, continuing the saga of Tarantino’s quest to keep his coveted screenplay out of the public eye before he’s ready.
While Hateful Eight is sure to do well, there’s still that looming Star Wars shadow that could take away from its overall opening sales. The two films no doubt have an overlapping audience, however it’s too early to write-off the Tarantino fan base. Though (arguably) harder to spot than the Star Wars fanatics, the Tarantinoids are ruthless.
The Hateful Eight opens Christmas Day in select theaters with a January 8th wide release for the normals living in Middle America. The soundtrack will be released December 18th through Decca Records, along with a special vinyl edition being released through Jack Whites Third Man Records, just in time to snag a present for that pesky cinephile you drew in the office Secret Santa.
