When a legendary record producer offers you free recording time in the studio where some of the greatest songs in the world were created, there’s only one appropriate response: You drop everything and go.
That’s what Austin’s Soul Track Mind did when Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell, son of Hi Records producer Willie Mitchell, offered to record the band after serving as a judge for the 2014 Louisiana Music Prize contest. That wasn’t even part of the prize, which they won. Fronted by the charismatic singer Donovan Keith in 2008, the group has been steadily gaining a following as they continue to blow away audiences at basically every venue in Austin with their infectiously danceable blend of funk, soul, pop and R&B. But these days the band is thinking bigger, beyond being just another Austin band with a decent local following, and the invitation to go to Memphis couldn’t have come at a better time.
Soul Track Mind eagerly trooped to Memphis’ Royal Studios to work in the same space where Al Green and others recorded so many classics — and where the latest Record of the Year Grammy winner, “Uptown Funk,” was born. Soul Track Mind singer/songwriter Donovan Keith, co-founding guitarist Jonathon Zemek and their bandmates came up with “Generation Song,” a track that signals the band’s musical evolution.
Glide Magazine is excited to present an exclusive premiere of Soul Track Mind’s new single “Generation Song”. The song captures this band at an exciting time as they break away from the retro soul and funk sound they are known for and move towards something that falls in a poppier realm with influences of disco and modern dance music.
The band shares their own story behind the tune: “‘Generation Song’ is our first song from producer Boo Mitchell with plenty more exciting material to follow. With this song we continue pushing ourselves to create new music that’s meaningful, honest, and heartfelt with our own unique sound and style. This is song is different from anything we’ve done and it alludes to a new inspiration and energy we are trying to capture.”
