LCD Soundsystem Returns! Here Are 10 Ways James Murphy Could Update “Losing My Edge”

With the upcoming LCD Soundsystem reunion, album release and tour, fans of the band are going to be able to hear songs live that they never thought they’d hear again. We’ll be able to boogie to “Home,” jump up and down and cry with our besties for “All My Friends,” and shout-brag that “Daft Punk Is Playing at My House.” Plus, Murphy and friends have said that there will be new music to covet sometime this year, so it’s really just a bunch of great news all around.

But in order to still toe the line of hip-not-hip substitute teachers, we think that James Murphy should consider updating some of his references in the classic midlife-crisis jam “Losing My Edge.” The song is structured as a stream-of-consciousness indie resume, as Murphy boasts about waking up naked on the beach in Ibiza, laments losing out to “better-looking people with better ideas and more talent,” and spends a good chunk of the song simply listing all of the cool records he owns. There’s no moral to the story, no big light bulb moment for the song’s protagonist – instead, it ends on a chorus of, “You don’t know what you really want.” It’s funny and heartbreaking all at once. In case you forgot what the song sounds like, here’s a triumphant live version from LCD Soundsystem’s “final” show at Madison Square Garden in 2011:

Murphy has said that this coming-of-middle-age anthem was both taking a stab at his own fears of losing his “cool” to people who adopted his approach to DJing, and a general commentary on those who would prey on the art of others simply to garner fame and attention. It’s self-reflective, but with a big enough mirror to capture the rest of us, too. It pokes fun at how fragile we are that we want to be the first, the originals, but also honors that desire by embracing its roots in a desire to be loved and accepted.

In no particular order, here are 10 recommendations so we can still proclaim, “I was there”:

1. Vine Celebrities — Is James losing his edge to the stars of Vine? Or is he playing Vine clips to the rock kids at CBG…aww. Either way, Vine celebrities are here to stay (until Vine is totally dead, probably before the year ends):

2. Bernie Sanders — v. relevant, v. musical already. This could be the new “GIL! SCOTT-! HERON!” chant, because there are just enough syllables.

3. A Drake diss — This could also be a Meek Mill diss, we’re impartial.

4. Holograms — post-Coachella-Tupac this really hasn’t happened again so this is a chance for LCD to be very much at the head of this trend. We’re not sure if we’re suggesting that they simply mention holograms in the song, or have one smacking James Murphy in the face onstage at every live show (a la their “Losing My Edge” music video), but there’s opportunity here that simply cannot be passed up.

5. Food selfies — This could be a thing where you put food all over your face, selfie, and then ask IG to guess what food it is. It could also be food in the shape of a face taking a selfie. The possibilities are endless, really.

6. Subway Music — Might as well plug the project in your OTHER project, Murphy.

7. Netflix Original Programming“I liked orange BEFORE it was the new black” is the line we’d suggest going with here.

8. Taking a Much-Needed Vacation — Who doesn’t like this?? Instant likability from this reference. We’re all dreaming about rum drinks already.

9. The Sun — This GLOBE is really WARMING US, AMIRITE?!

10. Jesus — Because if HE can be reborn, why not LCD Soundsystem?!
