Creeping Weeds: See Through

[rating=4.00]

The Philadelphia five-piece has created a hazy indie-pop gem with See Through.  Pete Stewart, Justin Seitz, Chris Wirtalla. Kate Stewart and Cara Stewart have managed to sprinkle parts of major artists throughout the 11 tracks but never overpower any of them with mimicry.

“Master Plan” and “(Wrapped in) Gauze” flair like Modest Mouse with fadeouts and tempo changes.  “Greetings from SLO” ends careening forward, propelled by a fantastic guitar-outro in the vein of Television.  The biggest overall influence seems to come from Pavement or more aptly Stephen Malkums and the Jicks as the album contains that slightly off-kilter sheen but shines with sweetness showing off professional, catchy songwriting with ease.

I’m not saying “Vanessa from Queens” spent all her “Weekends at the Shore” with a “Light in the Window” but she certainly would fit in perfectly.    While comparing bands to each other can feel forced and fake See Through makes it enjoyable and doesn’t suffer the slightest because of it.  Creeping Weeds have absorbed and produced delightfully textured and extremely alive music.
