The months-long march of awards season reached its penultimate height this morning with the announcement of the nominations for the 89th annual Academy Awards. Nominations largely mirrored what we’ve been seeing with the critics and guild awards since December, and no real shockers or dark horses found their way into the nominee pool (sorry, Deadpool fans). The most shocking nominations came for Hacksaw Ridge, which was nominated both for Best Picture and Best Director for Mel Gibson, signaling that the Hollywood community may finally be willing to let him back into their good graces following his drunken, anti-Semitic rant in 2006.
As expected, this year’s ceremony seems poised to be a battle between La La Land (which tied the record for nominations with 14) and Moonlight, with both films going head to head against each other in several categories, including Best Picture and Best Director. Of course, the popularity of both films could split the vote, allowing for an underdog to sneak their way home with a statue. We won’t know for sure until February 26, when Jimmy Kimmel takes the stage to host this year’s ceremony. For now, here’s the full list of nominations.
