After taking the Who's "Tommy" through the U.K. in July, Roger Daltrey will bring the famed rock opera to North America this fall.
Daltrey and his band will perform 28 "Tommy" shows beginning Sept. 13 in Hollywood, Fla., and playing a mix of arenas, theaters and casinos through Nov. 2 in Winnipeg. The venture has the blessing of "Tommy" composer and Who guitarist Pete Townshend, who issued a statement saying that it's "great to see Roger performing 'Tommy' with his band in 2011. I will be there in spirit. Roger has my complete and most loving support."
The tour marks the first time "Tommy" will be performed in its entirety in North America since the Who's reunion tour of 1989. Daltrey calls his production — unveiled during a Teenage Cancer Trust benefit March 25 at London's Royal Albert Hall — "a 'Tommy' show for today's audience from a different perspective," and Townshend gives a thumbs-up to that approach, too, saluting it as a "faithful presentation of the original work as a backbone for a set of wider material. It is wonderful to hear the way Roger and his new band re-interpret the old songs."
