VIDEO PREMIERE: The Breeders’ Kelley Deal and Ampline’s Mike Montgomery Team Up On “Steam”

R.Ring is the new project from Kelley Deal of The Breeders and Mike Montgomery of post-hardcore outfit Ampline. With little more than guitars, voices and keys, the duo create music that’s sparse, abrasive, chaotic and lulling…often within the same song. Those expecting Deal andMontgomery to make music that sounds like their other bands will be surprised by how much of a departure R. Ring actually is.

On April 28th R. Ring release their debut album Ignite the Rest via SofaBurn RecordsTo pull it off, the duo enlisted the help of a few friends – many of which come from other notable bands – to flesh out some of the material. The bits of drumming that appear are courtesy of Laura King (Mac MaCaughan and the Non-Believers, Fleshwounds), Leo DeLuca (Southeast Engine) and professional skateboarder Kristian Svitak. The compelling cello arrangements are by Lori Goldston (Earth / Nirvana). The result is a collecting of tracks that run the gamut from plaintive meanderings to noise pieces to mid-tempo swoons to raucous barn-burners.

Today Glide Magazine is excited to premiere the music video for “Steam”. The song is hypnotic and whispery, and given beautiful textures by the presence of Lori Goldston’s cello and Kelley Deal’s enchanting backing vocals. This is fitting for the video, which is simply a slow tracking shot of a train state platform.

Reflecting on the video and the song, Mike Montgomery has this to say:

“Steam is one of the first songs Kelley and I started playing together. She used to accompany my guitar and singing on keys. One night on a tour, her keyboard broke as we went to start the song and she ended up just singing her melody through some guitar pedals to get us through it. We’ve done it that way ever since. With the addition of Lori Goldston’s cello on this album version it’s really a nice setting for the narrative: subjects trapped in time ignoring the looming futility of stubborn adherence to an ideal. Chris Glass’ captivating slow motion video captures the mood perfectly.”
