Film Bits: RIP Michael Parks (1940-2017)

Actor Michael Parks Dies at 77

Legendary actor and singer Michael Parks passed away earlier today; he was 77. Best known for his role as Sheriff Earl McGraw in From Dusk til Dawn, Death Proof, and Kill Bill, McGraw was an actor of immense talent who wowed everyone he ever worked with. Director Kevin Smith, whom McGraw worked with on Tusk and Red State, referred to him as “the Yoda of acting,” in a social media post announcing his death. His career spanned over five decades, beginning with small roles in television in the early 60s, and includes almost 150 total screen appearances. Parks also had some success as a country singer, recording several albums and releasing numerous singles, including “Long Lonesome Highway.” Parks leaves an incredible legacy that touched the lives of countless people around the globe, and he will be terribly missed.

‘Hellboy’ Creator Announces Reboot

Guillermo del Toro, Ron Perlman, and the entirety of the internet may have wanted it, but it wasn’t meant to be. Dreams of a Hellboy 3 came crashing down late last year when it was announced that the studio was unable to grant del Toro the budget he needed to finish his trilogy. That doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last from Hellboy, however. Creator Mike Mignola announced via social media earlier this week that a new, rebooted movie was in development with Neil Marshall (The Descent) tapped as director and Stranger Things star David Harbour set to star as the titular demonic hero. Mignola promised an R-rated adventure that lives up to the Hellboy name. I’m not usually one to knock a reboot but this feels kind of wrong. Nothing against Marshall or Harbour, however, who are both inspired choices for the job, and I suppose anything is better than nothing, but it would have been nice to see the completion of the del Toro trilogy. C’est la vie.

‘Woodshock’ Trailer Teases Atmospheric Intensity

An atmospheric new trailer hit the internet this week for a new film from indie masters A24. Woodshock, from writer/directors Kate and Laure Mulleavy stars Kirsten Dunst as a woman driven to a paranoia induced nervous breakdown after taking a drug. The trailer reveals very little, but it’s an unsettling work of creeping madness with a beautiful aesthetic—the kind which A24 has been come to known for in recent years. The studio has crept up hard recently, even earning the Best Picture award at this year’s Oscars for Moonlight. Who knows what madness lay waiting in Woodshock, but this looks like it might be the sleeper hit of the fall. We’ll know for sure when it hits theaters on September 15.

Donald Glover to Helm ‘Deadpool’ Animated Series

Deadpoolmania continues to grow. As the world readies itself for Deadpool 2 next year, Fox announced today that a new, adult cartoon adaptation of everyone’s favorite Merc with a Mouth is now in the works at FXX, home of Archer. Donald Glover (Community, Atlanta) is set to run the show, alongside his brother, Stephen, with whom he works on Atlanta. The series has been given a 10-episode order, which is more or less standard for adult oriented cartoons these days, and is expected to premiere sometime in 2018.

Judge Dredd Heading for TV

Dredd (2012)Karl Urban

The massive, years-long push to see a continuation of 2012’s Dredd seems to have finally worked, at least in some form. Entertainment Weekly confirmed today that Judge Dredd will soon be heading to television in Judge Dredd: Mega City One. No word yet on whether or not this will be a proper continuation of the film, though star Karl Urban has repeatedly expressed his desire to return to the role, even on television. The producers of Dredd are both on board, so there’s at least a decent chance this will be sequel fans have pined for. At the very least, if it maintains the same tone as the film, it should still be a fan please. No word yet on casting or premiere possibilities.
