Film Bits: ‘Kingsmen: Golden Circle’ Unveils New Trailer

Second ‘Kingsmen: The Golden Circle’ Trailer Amps Up the Action

The second trailer for Kingsmen: The Golden Circle brings even more of the ridiculously high octane espionage action in addition to showing us even more from new characters, including Channing Tatum and Jeff Bridges, who star as members of the “American cousins” of the super-secret British spy agents. From what we can tell, fans of the original film will find plenty more of the same over the top action that made the first Kingsmen so beloved, ramped up considerably since, well, it’s a sequel. The trailer reveals little about what to expect from the plot of the new movie, but we do get to see a massive glowing lasso rip someone in half, and that’s kind of enough for me. Kingsmen: The Golden Circle opens September 22.

There’s a new ‘Saw’ Movie. Yay?

You know what we never needed? A sequel to Saw. But that didn’t stop them from running the series into the ground (even after killing their murderous vigilante in the second movie, who then somehow kept killing for five more movies) before blessedly ending the series with Saw 3D or, simply, Saw VII, in 2010. But just like the character himself, once you think he’s gone, he comes back in a big, big way. Which brings us to Jigsaw, the inexplicable 7th sequel to James Wan’s low budget classic. Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) seems back from the dead. Or is he? Or…actually, does it matter? It’s been established that he has followers who carry on his good works. In the end, it doesn’t matter whether it’s him or Cary Elwes (who…you know what, it’s complicated) or someone else, so long as people get murdered in horrifically complicated ways. And Jigsaw seems to promise that. Mission accomplished, I guess. Jigsaw opens October 27.

Taraji P. Henson Kicks Ass, Takes Names in ‘Proud Mary’ Trailer

Since John Wick first blessed our lives three years ago, we’ve seen a renaissance of sorts of hitmen centric action. The latest entry into the burgeoning genre resurgence, Proud Mary, released its first trailer today and promises an intriguing take on the idea of cold blooded hitman…or, in this case, hitwoman. Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures) stars as the titular Mary, and while the trailer doesn’t tell us much about the plot, it does give us high doses of gunplay and explosions and plenty of shots of Henson walking around like an absolute badass, all clad in black and sporting a tough as nails no bullshit expression. Hopefully later trailers tell us a bit more of what to expect, but for now, we’re intrigued. Proud Mary opens January 12, 2018.

‘Arrested Development’ Season 5 to be a Murder Mystery

The long-awaited and oft-discussed fifth season of Arrested Development is definitely probably coming soon to Netflix, and star Jason Bateman recently let it slip how the next season of the Bluth family will be unfolding. The new season will apparently be a murder mystery, centered around the mysterious death of Liza Minelli’s Lucille from the end of last season. The new season will also satirically explore the thematic links between the dysfunctional Bluth family as well as the Trump family, and lord knows that creator Mitchell Hurwitz has plenty to work with on that front. That being said, there’s still no exact date for a release for the new season, though they do plan to have it available on Netflix sometime in 2018.

‘Game of Thrones’ Showrunners Announce New HBO Series, ‘Confederates’

With Game of Thrones coming to a conclusion at the end of next year, series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have landed a deal to develop a new show for HBO, Confederate. The new series will be an alternate history where the south won the Civil War and is said to explore race and racism through the lens of a modern day slave state. The announcement raised a few eyebrows, with many decrying the objectification of slavery for entertainment purposes, but at this point HBO will no doubt let the two get away with whatever they can. This isn’t exactly a new idea; the same themes have been explored countless times in novels and movies, so unless the two can bring something entirely new to the table, it does kind of make you wonder what the point is. Still, the two have earned the trust and faith of a loyal following, so maybe lightning can strike twice.
