Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip Dies at 53

Gord Downie, the poetic lead singer of the Tragically Hip whose determined fight with brain cancer inspired a nation, has died, according to a statement on the band’s website. He was 53.

In the wake of his diagnosis with glioblastoma — an incurable form of cancer — the musician became a symbol of perseverance in the face of his mortality. He spent the last chapter of his life raising funds for brain cancer research and advocating for the rights of Canada’s Indigenous Peoples and leading his band on a highly memorable final tour last summer.

He died Tuesday night surrounded by his children and family, according to a statement on the band’s website.

“Gord knew this day was coming – his response was to spend this precious time as he always had – making music, making memories and expressing deep gratitude to his family and friends for a life well lived, often sealing it with a kiss… on the lips,” the statement said.

  1. Have seen the Hip many times here in Vermont, always a great show. My thoughts and prayers go out to Gord’s family, friends and band mates. He was a great talent and will be greatly missed by all!
