VIDEO PREMIERE: David Robert King Crafts Solemn Yet Hopeful Gothic Folk With “Are You Thinking About Leaving?”

While trading songs at a songwriter gathering in Nashville, TN, Idaho native and high school teacher David Robert King’s boneyard truth telling, worn and vulnerable voice, and magnetic melodies were overheard by legendary singer-songwriter Mary Gauthier who told King, “I have a feeling we will get together someday.” This speculation led to King and Gauthier gracing stages throughout North America. David has also shared the stage with Josh Ritter, The Mark O’Connor Band, Tim O’Brien, Loudon Wainwright III, Darrell Scott, and Over The Rhine, and has collaborated with Emily Saliers of The Indigo Girls and Jonatha Brooke.

King’s dark, sometimes humorous songs, are unapologetically personal while grounded in the arid soil of his native Idaho. His songs reverberate with the sting of the high desert wind and the hidden power of the Snake River. All of this can be heard on his new album IDAHO, which is out on February 16. The album finds King sharing his tales of Mountain West heartache, loss and redemption. These days King has become known as Mary Gauthier’s longtime guitarist and frequent opening act, but IDAHO establishes him as a huge talent in his own right. About the album, Gauthier said, “David Robert King’s new record is a stunning soundscape of whispered confessions and poignant observations. A beautiful collection of haunting songs, it deserves a good listen.”

Today Glide is excited to premiere the new video for one of the album’s standout songs, “Are You Thinking About Leaving?” The video finds King hanging out on a rainy day in various leafy locales as he strums his guitar. King’s stoic presence – complete with a black suit – lends itself well to his deep vocals and solemn lyrics. The subtle piano and King’s acoustic guitar give the song a powerful mood that feels at once sad and hopeful, capturing his ability to conjure beautifully haunting gothic folk tunes.

Reflecting on the song, King has this to say:

“This is a quirky, simple, and short tune that comes from the dark corners of an insecure mind. The great constant in
life is departure; sometimes it’s others, and sometimes it’s us. Shot by the lovely Wendy Belkin on a rainy day in Decatur, GA.”
