Josh Rouse Establishes Smooth Groove On ‘Love in the Modern Age’ (ALBUM REVIEW)

[rating=7.00]

Josh Rouse has always taken an unassuming stance throughout most of his career, never making music that sounds so assertive as to detract from his generally supple style. Love in the Modern Age is no exception, a breezy set of songs that shimmer and shine with an irrepressible radiance that invites and entices the listener to simply go along for the ride. The sunny sentiments conveyed throughout, particularly on such songs as the title track, “Businessman” and “Ordinary People, Ordinary Lives” attest to Rouse’s easy going attitude and a general sense of satisfaction. The pulsating tempo remains constant throughout, and the light-hearted melodies find a comfortable fit within the realms of pure pop.

Over the years, Rouse has gradually shifted his MO, from that of astute singer/songwriter to one of a more mainstream musician whose work might entice the dance crowd as much as those who tend to probe for deeper intents. The atmospheric arrangements, especially on a song such as “Tropic Moon,” tends to indicate that Rouse’s interest in craft and conviction are still intact, but mostly, he appears interested in establishing a smooth groove and an easy air on nonchalance.

Consequently, Love in the Modern Age lives up to its title, at least a theoretical sense, and in today’s turbulent times, both the concept and the execution offer a pleasant respite. Granted, most of what the album offers can be absorbed with simply a cursory listen — if there are any heavy statements here, they mostly give way to the music’s giddier inclinations — but again, the pleasant pastiche offers all that’s really needed. It’s all part of Rouse’s regimen, one that consistently serves him well. Love in the Modern Age offers the sound of celebration and music that’s heralded from the heart.
