Cary Brothers’ Unique Song Styling Proves Enduring On New LP ‘Bruises’ (ALBUM REVIEW)

[rating=8.00]

Cary Brothers is not a sibling ensemble. In fact, as an individual, Brothers may be the most accomplished artist making music these days while still remaining all but unknown to the vast numbers of the listening public. His contribution to the Garden State soundtrack and abundant contributions to film and television scores have earned him a degree of success rarely accorded most artists, much less one who’s plied his craft for the past 14 years.

Nevertheless, Brothers’ efforts aren’t limited to any visual medium. His series of solo albums and EPs offers an impression that’s both durable and enduring. He sings with a well-considered croon and shares a dramatic delivery that gives him a unique but unmistakable sense of gravitas. Likewise, his arched emotional intensity allows each of his songs to resonate in a remarkable way. On his darkly titled new album Bruises he employs an emphatic sound — a sweep of suspense — that defines him as an undisputed master of mystique. Some songs — “Til the Stars” and “Can’t Read Your Mind” in particular — recall the dreamlike desire of Peter Gabriel, while others like “Crush” and “Past Come Round” make concessions to modern pop precepts without sacrificing the clarity and conviction which are so essential to Brothers’ craft. Each of these nine songs simulate a sound that’s haunting, captivating and compelling, with layers of tones and textures underscoring it all. Atmosphere has a lot to do with it, but Brothers’ sobering vocals ensure the enduring appeal.

Brothers may have made his masterpiece this time around, but ultimately it’s up to an audience to give him his due. Bruises is, its title aside, a knockout of an album, one fully deserving any kudos the critics might muster. At very least, it’s fully capable of leaving an emphatic impression, one indicative of Brothers’ brilliance as both an artist and auteur.
