Just ahead of their summer tour, The Smashing Pumpkins reunion has begun how very few may have expected. Although the he said, she said feud between lead singer/guitarist Billy Corgan and original bass player D’Arcy Wretzky continues, the band has moved on and now have a new single out entitled, “Solara.”
“Solara” is the first recording for The Pumpkins in over 18 years. Yet, they maintained if not elevated their nostalgic sound. Founding members Billy Corgan, James Iha, and Jimmy Chamberlin recorded in Malibu, California at Shangri La Studios with famous producer Rick Rubin and can’t forget longtime Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder. It’s just one of those fiery and exultant records that we’re accustomed to hearing from them.
Overall, the performance was exhilarating. Corgan was solid on the vocals with the distinct backlights. “I’m nothing but a body in my mind,” screams Corgan during the chorus. Meanwhile, Schroeder put the finishing touches on a phenomenal performance on the guitar.
Preparing for their upcoming Shiny and Oh So Bright tour, they gave the world a sample of what to expect in their first live television performance of “Solara” Monday night on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Furthermore, the Smashing Pumpkins also took us on a time machine back to their 1995 double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness with a performance of their hit “Zero.”
