SONG PREMIERE: Stephen Chopek Showcases Catchy Songwriting and Left of the Dial Rocker Sound With “We Live Our Day”

Stephen Chopek is a busy guy. Since releasing his debut album, See Through, back in 2012, he has managed to follow with 3 EPs and a full length album, Things Moving On Their Own Together, which garnered its fair share of critical praise, Skin Back Alley calling it “A skillfully crafted tapestry of punk, pop, folk and roots.”

Having cut tracks and toured with the likes of Charlie Hunter, John Mayer, and Jesse Malin, amongst others, Chopek has made a solid career as a busy session drummer, but addressing his solo repertoire, he has not only been quintessentially prolific, the indie singer/songwriter has taken the idea of being largely self-propelled quite seriously and has graced his own canon-to-date playing every instrument himself.

Chopek’s third album is no exception. Begin The Glimmer, as it shall be called, will be released on October 12th and while having relocated to Memphis from Jersey City in 2014, the new record is the really the first to reflect the influence and inspiration of his newly chosen hometown.

Mixed by legendary Memphian Doug Easley (Cat Power, Ben Nichols, Frazey Ford), Begin The Glimmer possesses a rapid-fire, stream of thought lyric styling reminiscent of Billy Bragg, and bedrock music that some amalgam of lighter Superchunk, heavier M. Ward, and the janglier, less decadent-era of The Replacements. And in it, Chopek has created an album that is urgent yet introspective, which, it might be said, is a description not too dissimilar from the singer/songwriter himself.

Today Glide is premiering “We Live Our Day”, one of the standout tracks on Begin The Glimmer. Chopek showcases his skills as am accomplished songwriter capable of writing catchy chorus and melodies that linger long after listening. He sets it to a left of the dial meets power pop soundtrack. Chopek’s propensity for mixing punk, pop and good old rock and roll is on full display, and it’s clear from “We Live Our Day” that he is one of the more underrated artists making music today.
