Teenage Bottlerocket/Arms Aloft: Triple Rock Social Club, Minneapolis, MN 9/14/12

Fans were pretty disappointed on September 14th when NOFX postponed the show they were scheduled to play at the Cabooze in Minneapolis that same night. The Lineup for the night was to be NOFX, Teenage Bottlerocket, Dillinger Four, and Arms Aloft. Many pre-sale tickets were sold and with fans still antsy for a show of sorts, Teenage Bottlerocket and Arms Aloft stepped up to the plate and announced they play the nearby Triple Rock Social Club instead.  The 380 capacity venue had a previous event scheduled so the doors didn’t open until eleven, with the show starting at midnight. With the last minute venue change and late start, one would have expected a small turnout – that was definitely not the case.

Wisconsin’s Arms Aloft warmed up the crowd with a handful of solid punk rock tunes before exiting the stage. The venue was abuzz with excitement as Slayers “South of Heaven” started playing through the speakers and a skeleton masked man holding up a bright pink sign with the Teenage Bottlerocket logo on it marched on stage in front of the audience. Wyoming’s Teenage Bottlerocket then shortly graced the stage, where loud cheers could be heard both inside and out of the venue. Instantly the band started playing the song “Freak Out!” and every time the band sang the words “Freak out!” the masked man would turn the sign around with the words “Freak Out!” printed on the other side, signaling the audience when to sing along. It was reminiscent to when the Ramones would have a masked man holding the sign saying “Gabba Gabba Hey” when they played live. It was a nice touch for Teenage Bottlerocket to bring back and the crowd loved it.

The band kept the attention of the audience limiting the transitions between songs to only a few seconds before starting into the next song. It was easy to tell that Teenage Bottlerocket’s style was heavily influenced by The Ramones as they performed song after song with little to no talking. Teenage Bottlerocket played a variety of songs including “Skate or Die,” “ Stupid Games,”  “Nuthouse,” “ Bigger then Kiss,” as well as a few compositions from the band’s latest album titled, Freak Out!

Even though the band rocked into the early AM, the audience loved the new, old, and in-between songs all the same.  By the sweaty end, the entire front row was leaning onto the stage shouting the lyrics back at the band and it was easy to tell that the band has a strong and dedicated fan base in Minneapolis.
