Silver Medal is a 5-piece rock band from Portland, Oregon that has taken rhythm-driven pop in one hand, a dog-eared existentialist novel in the other, and shaken the hell out of both until they make a catchy rhythm.
With a shared addiction to compelling hooks, pop harmonies, and depressive episodes (bummer on that last one, guys) the five best friends who compose Silver Medal came together in a neon-lit basement during the cold months of 2016 and have been writing irresistible nihilist-pop ever since.
Their freshman album, Easy Doesnʼt, was released in 2017. The satisfying nostalgia of crunchy guitars, earnest vocals and irony-free lyrics is balanced out by well-crafted melodies and shiny synth, all glued together by the bandʼs quintessentially Pacific Northwestern DIY ethos.
Live, the band alternates between bittersweet pop melodies and emotional, wall-of-sound rock, with an evolving mood that keeps the audience engaged as they easily swing from pensive, reflective melodies to drum-driven, danceable, pop-rock odes to Camus.
On January 17th the band will release their new EP Trophy Room and today Glide is excited to offer an exclusive early listen ahead of its release. In a way, this collection of five songs is sort of a quirky version of power pop, as the band incorporates moments of soaring euphoria alongside hooky guitar riffs and infectious lyrics. There is also plenty of bouncy and 80s-inspired synth layered in with upbeat, frenetic drumming that makes each song super danceable. This is the kind of music you throw on after a few drinks and a long week at work, dancing and singing along in your house by yourself or in a dark club with close friends. Above all else, Silver Medal want you to feel happy and feel good about where you’re at in life, and they succeed in doing just that with Trophy Room.
