Oscar Nominations Announced: ‘Joker’ Walks Away With 11

The months long award season build up reached its peak today with the announcement of the nominees for the 92nd annual Academy Awards. This year, as every year, found a mix of shocks and surprises as The Academy revealed who’s being honored.

Joker, a clear favorite all season, finds itself in the front-runner position with 11 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix. Just behind it, with 10 nominations each, is Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood, Martin Scorsese’s latest mob drama, The Irishman, and the single-shot World War I epic from Sam Mendes, 1917, which is fresh off a win at this year’s Golden Globes.

The shocks came mostly from who and what wasn’t nominated than for who and what was. Lulu Wang’s superb The Farewell was completely snubbed. Considering the nominations it had gotten by the guilds and societies leading up to the Oscars, its total absence is somewhat jaw-dropping. So, too, with Greta Gerwig, who despite having a movie up for Best Picture and despite being up for Best Adapted Screenplay found herself shut out of the Best Director race.

For the second year in a row, The Academy has elected to air the show without a host. While it wasn’t the smoothest show last year, the show was acclaimed for its ability to keep the evening moving without many hiccups. Hopefully they’ll have figured out a way to further streamline the evening and ensure an even more concise and engaging evening. We’ll know for sure on February 9, with the 92nd Annual Academy Awards air on ABC.
