The songwriting of Dakota Theim comes out of dreary Portland, Oregon like a ray of endearment from a bygone age. Growing up, he fell in love with pop and rock music from the 60s and 70s, which has saturated itself into his songwriting. His songs deal with themes of love, longing and navigating life as a young adult. Despite Somewhere Under The Sun being Theim’s first official album release, it stands out as honest and timeless. His songs are simultaneously catchy and reflective – they’ll get stuck in your head, then move you with their sincerity of feeling.
Today Glide is excited to premiere Theim’s video for his song “She’s a Mystery.” The song is a bouncy, sun-drenched romp with acoustic strumming and flourishes of dreamy surf rock guitar and poppy, lighthearted lyrics. Drawing a card from the 60s pop rock of the Beatles as well as the sunny surf grooves of the Beach Boys, Theim manages to capture the innocence and simplicity of music from a bygone era without sounding like a throwback cliche. His saccharine rock style is infused with power pop and psychedelia, making for a catchy morsel that warrants a loud play while driving with the windows down on a warm summer day.
Theim describes the inspiration behind the song:
When I wrote “She’s a Mystery”, I was thinking about how bizarre and confusing love can sometimes be and I wanted to write an upbeat, lighthearted pop tune. It came together super fast. I just started playing some chords and the lyrics and melody just seemed to flow right out of me. It has easily become one of my favorites off the record as well as one of my favorites to play live.
