RIP Todd Nance: Longtime Widespread Panic Drummer & Founder Dies at 57

Todd Nance, Widespread Panic founding member and longtime drummer from 1986-2016 sadly passed away today (8/19/20) at the age of 57 in Athens, GA. Nance was a road warrior who played thousands of shows for the band and served as their rhythm rock through the band’s previous triumphs and tribulations.

The “Toddfather” as Panic fans called him, served as a key counterpoint to percussionist Sunny Ortiz whether during epic songs like “Papa’s Home” or a dance-driven number like “Arlene”(below); a chugging rhythm that wasn’t technically innovative but consistent and grounded. Panic became one of rock’s biggest touring draws and continued to retain a devoted and large following after the 2002 death of Mike Houser to become one of rock’s titanic touring acts. Due to personal struggles, Nance left Panic in 2016 and was replaced with current drummer Duane Trucks. Aside from his drumming chops, Nance had a strong singing voice and took lead vocals on “Clinic Cynic” and “Down.”

The band provided the following statement via Facebook…

“It is with great sadness that we announce that Todd Nance, a founding member of Widespread Panic, passed away early this morning in Athens, GA from sudden and unexpectedly severe complications of a chronic illness,” the statement from the family said.

From the Widespread Panic Family:

With heavy Hearts and Loving memories we say good bye to our Brother Todd Alton Nance. Widespread Panic was born the night of Todd’s first show. He and Mikey had played music together in High school (maybe Junior high) and with a lucky thought, Michael tracked him down and asked him to join us – because we had a gig, but needed a drummer. For thirty years Todd was the engine of the Widespread Panic. He wrote great songs, and was a giving and forgiving collaborator. T Man was the epitome of a “team player.” Drove the Band and drove the van.

Funny, adventurous, and a very kind Soul, we wish Todd and his Family peace during this sad time after so many happy times.

Safe travels, Brother Todd.

With Love, the Boys and Girls of Widespread Panic
