Duff Thompson is a songwriter, musician, and producer whose songs are a swampy blend of folk, pop, and garage rock. With special attention given to arrangement, his sound has been described as modern, classic, and timeless all at once. His debut album, Haywire, will be out December 11th on Mashed Potato Records.
He’s performed extensively throughout the US and Canada, and has shared the stage with Big Thief, Twain, and The Deslondes.
In addition to his own project, he is co-founder of the New Orleans-based label and studio known as Mashed Potato Records. He’s spent the last few years recording a wide variety of artists, many of whom can be heard on the 2019 releases, “Mashed Potato Records Vol’s I & II”.
Today Glide is excited to premiere “You’re Pretty Good,” a standout track on Thompson’s new album. Opening with a meandering, laid back guitar and a simple beat, Thompson’s vocals feel raw and in the moment as he ponders a series of questions. It’s easy to hear some of his New Orleans compadres like The Deslondes in the music, but Thompson takes more of a lo-fi, outsider folk approach to his construction of the song that sets him apart from his peers. Though it may not hit you at first, there is something catchy and approachable to Thompson’s unique style of folk-rock.
Thompson describes the inspiration behind the song:
“Sometimes when trying to express a single feeling or idea, it’s more effective to dumb the lyrics down and get straight to the point. The lyrics aren’t exactly literal but the idea is that sometimes, for better or worse, it feels like only the present matters.”
