After cutting his teeth as the frontman for The District Attorneys, Party Dolls, and PURSES, Athens, GA songwriter, Drew Beskin started releasing material as a solo artist in 2017 with his debut Cha-Ching Machine. Beskin quickly followed that up with his sophomore effort Nostalgia Porn in 2018. Since those releases, he has been playing strings of limited show dates in the southeast. Since 2018, Beskin has been working with other artists in the Athens music scene including co-writing/producing with Tedo Stone for his Same Old Kid album all while working on material for a 3rd solo LP. Beskin will be releasing a few new tracks in 2020 while putting the finishing touches on the new album that will be released in the spring of 2021.
Today Glide is excited to premiere “The Cut of My Jib,” the first of two singles coming in 2020. The second and final single of the year “Swimming in Bed” will be out on December 10th. “The Cut of My Jib” is Beskin’s first new solo song in over two years and it is a joyous return mixing all of the elements of Beskin’s preferred brand of pop and rock. With a spunky guitar hook and an uptempo drum beat, the song is indeed a pop-laced groover that embraces the kind of art rock and oddball pop that put Beskin’s home base of Athens, GA on the map. The song carries an airy melodicism which results in a sound that feels catchy and euphoric. Spicy guitar licks and jagged solos also make this a proper rock and roll endeavor, and it’s easy to picture people dancing along in a crowded bar…if we ever get to do that again. Ultimately, the song is a special moment and a taste of what’s to come.
Beskin describes the process and inspiration behind the song:
“It has been over two years since I have released any solo material which for me is an eternity. I chose to release “The Cut of My Jib” because to me it is one of the more fun and interesting songs I’ve had the pleasure of recording. It is about being true to oneself and finding confidence in your shortcomings and discovering your strut. The tune started with the riff that plagued my brain for the better part of 2019. I wanted to blend Motown with the vibe of some of my favorite newer bands today like Dehd. I’ve always like the old colloquialism “I like the cut of your jib” and when I landed on that as the title for the riff, the rest of the song wrote itself quickly. We had a blast recording this song at Chase Park Transductions this summer especially after having delayed going into the studio due to COVID. My hope is that you come for the riff, stay for the melodies and remember “The Cut of My Jib” for the outro section with my bass boy Phillip Brantley’s amazing guitar solo. It is brilliant, hilarious and my favorite solo I’ve ever had on one of my tracks. The song is full of special moments like that.”
