Garnering praise locally and abroad, Nashville-based band Mountains Like Wax continues to plunge themselves deeper into the dilapidated roots of its region’s anthemic indie scene, establishing themselves as a cornerstone of revival with every song and movement. Mountains Like Wax is not only a voice of growth, but the thought and idea of that growth, journey, and coming of age. Their songs depict the intimate and personal nature of love fading, without the knowledge and understanding of how to reconcile, yet with the hope that keeps stepping into the ether.
Since forming in 2015, members Mitchell Taylor and Sam Katz have created a layered, engaging soundscape that pulls from a myriad of influences across indie rock, from Radiohead to The Killers and Oasis. They’ve built a dedicated fan base in Nashville and beyond, earning coverage from major outlets including Paste, American Songwriter, The Big Takeover and more.
Today Glide is excited to premiere the band’s latest single “Are You Changing?,” which finds them examining the process of transformation while looking back on the path that led them there. This big indie rock anthem brings to mind 90s alt-rock and early 2000s Britpop but with its own style that melds orchestral rock and roll with a pop sensibility. The track tackles the inner conflict that can emerge when trying to accept the past in order to move forward. This translates to emotionally charged vocals, huge guitar build-ups, and an all-encompassing beat that could fill an arena with ease. “Are You Changing?” is the latest taste of new music that will culminate in a full length record to be released in 2022. Additional singles will be released in the coming weeks.
The band describes the inspiration behind the song:
“Where we’ve been and where we hope to go. The concept of change is frightening to a lot of people. Sometimes change can be isolating, and sometimes change can be growth. How do you look back on the grit and the struggles you had to go through to meet the beauty you face and experience now? Stop numbing yourself to feeling what you need to feel. Recognize it and live it, then keep going. ‘Are You Changing?’ is the hope and appreciation as we recollect those hard moments that shaped us into who we are.”
