LISTEN: The Night Flight Drops Hazy Atmospheric Folk On “Misery”

The Night Flight brings in shades of everyone from The Band to Big Star to Elliot Smith while somehow sounding totally unique. All four members — Sam Holmes, Harry Phillips, drummer Dan Webb, and bassist Oliver Halvorsen — can agree on the songwriting perfection of the Beatles, but there the similarities end. It’s why so many disparate elements creep into the mix.

Stunning acoustic guitars speak fluently as Holmes muses with tactical inflection. The dynamic spacing on the track – ever so presently –  builds and breathes with welcoming movement. Existing in an atmospheric state of divinity, “Misery” is a beautiful and impressive offering that rekindles the serene folk of José González

“Misery” is the search to find meaning and clarity amidst the pangs of heartbreak. We took a classic approach with the recording of the song in an attempt to create an almost guttural timbre to match the raw emotion of the song. Led by two undulating acoustic guitars, a mournful double bass and topped off with that stunning, sweeping string arrangement from Rob Moose.”
