LISTEN: Steve Bamidele Proves Tastefully Textured on Soulful “Tethered”

Born in Jebba, Nigeria to a Nigerian mother and British father, Steve Bamidele grew up in Long Melford, Suffolk as one of the few, and often only, children of colour. Raised on the sounds of church music via his mother’s choir vocals, it wasn’t until a music lesson in 5th grade that the creative spark in a young Bamidele was ignited and immediately recognized by his teachers. Teenage years would see the budding musician harnessing pop-punk, rap, hip-hop and rock infused influences into his own evolving sound.

Check out “Tethered,” from Bamidele that sports a dreamlike piano progression that opens the song as the soulful vocalist’s warm timbre leads the listener into a soaring ethereal soundscape. Highlighted by tasteful horn stabs and tactile spatial intelligence, “Tethered” is held up by an almost subaquatic production texture, proving it a modern soul smasher reminiscent of Parcels and Jungle.

“I’d lived my life up until 2020 incredibly blinkered – nothing but making music really mattered to me, and I was very flippant with the people close to me,” Bamidele explains. “After my father’s passing at the end of 2019, and then the COVID pandemic, the indefatigable importance of family and friends became so apparent to me, and forced me to question the way I live my life. ‘Tethered’ is an apology to my girlfriend ‘Lucy’ who has dealt with my shit for 5 years. Lyrically, it’s sort of a sister song to ‘Little by Little by Little’ which was essentially an apology song to my family.”
