Years before Americana music earned its own category at the Grammy Awards, Steve Forbert helped pioneer the genre’s mix of folk, roots-rock, and richly delivered storytelling. He’s been a torchbearer of that sound for more than four decades since, navigating the twists and turns of an acclaimed career that’s taken him from gold records to Grammy nominations, from New York City’s CBGB to Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe, from his 1978 debut album to 2022’s vital and versatile Moving Through America, due out May 20th via Blue Rose (PRE-ORDER).

It’s the songs that take center stage with Moving Through America. Filled with character portraits and quirky insights, the album unfolds like a mosaic of modern-day American life, delivered by someone who’s been crisscrossing the country for nearly half a century. With an author’s nuance and a humorist’s wit, Forbert offers glimpses into the everyday lives of his characters: a dog running from the sky’s thunderclaps; a Houston man preparing to take his girlfriend out for fried oysters; a road-tripping motorist steadily making his way across the Midwest. Forbert inhabits each character, turning their storylines into first-person narratives that blur the lines between subject and scribe.

Moving Through America marks a new chapter in a story that’s still unfolding. These are songs for the head, the heart, and the heartland. Moving Through America is an album of songs that’ll get under your skin. Once again, this legacy songwriter finds narrative gold in the everyday, delivering a batch of songs that show he’s got plenty of fuel left in the tank. Steve Forbert is still moving through America, and with his latest album, he takes us with him.

With the announcement of the album release, Glide is excited to premiere the new single “Living The Dream” and its video. The song finds Forbert’s singer-songwriter skills sharper and more creative than ever as he crafts a catchy roots rocker with a touch of folk-pop. According to Forbert, “‘Living The Dream’ is a portrait of a recently incarcerated drug dealer who’s very happy to be out and about. ‘It’s peaches and cream!’ Let’s just hope his feeling of elation doesn’t wind up getting him into more trouble.” Indeed, Forbert presents this character’s story that is rough, darkly humorous, and endearing all at once. Like most of the songs on his new album, the tune presents a vivid slice of Americana, one that is enhanced by the oddly pleasing visuals of Forbert performing at a carnival.

  1. Past Time for the songwriters hall of fame to vote Steve Forbert into the hall. 50 years and close to 300 songs shows his endurance. His catalogue has a variety of melodies and lyrics that show how well rounded his songwriting style is. Please make this a reality.

  2. Must get to Meridian MS (where I taught Steve in the 6th grade) when he plays there in May. What a thrill it will be to see him. Hope he makes it back to Atlanta some day!
