Enchanting and mesmerizing, “Killing Feels” is a cinematic track fit for the big screen. The second single from Monako’s upcoming EP, In Shapes I-III, “Killing Feels” picks up right where the previous single “Know My Name” left off, continuing the Canadian/German group’s journey into unbridled creativity and melding of genres. A collaboration with Canadian group Bibi Club, “Killing Feels” sees the band at the peak of their performance blending climactic indie sheen in the vein of Grizzly Bear and Local Natives.
A sweeping, building alternative pop song infused with elements of folk and electronic, “Killing Feels” is about contemplating the idea of giving up, the feeling of hopelessness when there isn’t a way out. Amidst the darker lyrics and themes, the arrangements on the track feel hopeful, the ending resembling the light at the end of a dark tunnel, as the song takes you through.
Singer Sadek Martin-Massarweh and founding member Naomie De Lorimier were born and raised in the Canadian metropole and have been friends with Bibi Club’s members Adèle Trottier-Rivard and Nicolas Basque for years. With Monako’s In Shapes I-III project in was time to revive this cross-globe partnership and work on a song together.
Monako creates music that is impossible to put into one genre, covering vast amounts of ground, both sonically and emotionally. The sonic experience ranges from Canadian-inspired folk to grooved up R’n’B, finest indie-rock melancholia but also intelligently built neo-jazz tracks. Originating from several projects they operate as an interdisciplinary collective between Montreal and Hamburg.
A 3-track EP In Shapes I-III will be released in April, featuring the Berlin-based multi- talent Valentin Hansen, the Cameroonian-US-American electro-pop multi-instrumentalist Laetitia Tamko aka Vagabon, as well as Bibi Club, a music project from Montreal. The band is currently working on a musical short movie featuring (musical and visual) artists from Germany, Canada, and the US – including artist friend Vagabon.
