There’s no “misunderstanding” — Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks, guitarist Mike Rutherford, and singer/drummer Phil Collins took their final bow as a band last Saturday (March 26), performing a 20-song set in London’s O2 Arena.
Collins, who suffers from numerous health conditions — admittedly, much of which was caused by years of heavy drinking — performed while seated in an office chair and said, “Tonight is a very special night, of course, we’re playing here in London, and it’s the last stop of our tour and it’s the last show — for Genesis. It’s difficult for us to believe you still came out to see us. After tonight we’ve all got to get real jobs.”
Peter Gabriel did not perform with Genesis but was in the audience. A photo of Collins flanked by Gabriel and long-time Tour Manager Richard McPhail appeared on the fan-operated World of Genesis Twitter feed, as did a final photo of Banks, Rutherford, and Collins — with Collins standing — officially onstage together as a group.
On Sunday (March 27), Genesis’ Wikipedia page already referred to the band in the past tense, saying they “were an English rock band formed at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey.”
