“Your Ghost” the debut solo release from Brooklyn’s Maggie Carson, is a compelling burst of modern Appalachia that is both fresh and deeply ingrained in the American story. On this single, Carson pulls from years of touring experience and a deep well of influences from both the past and present, to put her own stamp on the genre, much like the many great NYC folk artists that came before her. A unique style of banjo playing that blends clawhammer and fingerpicking along with dynamic drumming and shimmering tack piano and organ (played by Alex Tween of The Forms) back Carson’s timeless, unadorned voice to breath new life into a melody plucked from the Lomax archives. “Your Ghost” is off the upcoming full-length album The Dark Was Aglow, out on Open Ocean in June 2022.
“We recorded this song out at Oceanus Studios in Rockaway Beach, Queens – on the edge of the city, on the edge of the ocean, on the precipice of spring. Washy keys, lush guitar, and rain on the windows. Chilly breaks on the beach. This song is about the feeling that someone is with you despite their absence,” says Carson.
