LISTEN: On “Full Time Hobby,” Matthew Bailey Rounds Up Crafty Bedroom Pop

Matthew Bailey is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter, guitarist, producer and recording engineer. When not producing records or on the road supporting some of Canada’s finest songwriters, he can be found in his home studio composing songs and exploring the spaces between notes. Since moving to Toronto in 2006, Matthew has released original music under the band names The Long Haul, Staycation, Playdate, The Psychological Rangers, ES+MB as well as albums under his own name.

Pull out the headphones and surround yourself in the 60 ‘s-inspired bedroom pop world of Matthew Bailey’s “Full-Time Hobby”. Like a lost track off of the Beach Boys’ 1968 Friends album, the track is loose but complex in its own easy-going way and doesn’t need over-the-top production or a small army of studio musicians and overdubs to have a surprisingly full and engaging sound. “Full-Time Hobby” is the third in a series of singles released by Bailey this year.

“When this song was first written and demo’d I was touring as the guitarist for Andy Shauf. Listening back now I think that regularly performing Andy’s guitar parts influenced me during the period when recording this track. A few of the single note guitar lines and the chorus’ guitar line in “Full-Time Hobby ” feel especially linked to my approach to performing Andy’s music,” says Bailey.
