Toro Y Moi’s MAHAL is shaping up to be one of the best albums of the year. And last night (7/25) he brought one of the funkiest songs on the project to the late-night stage as Moi appeared on Fallon to perform “Millennium”. The poetic song portrays a unique take on escapism and Moi has never sounded better.
Toro Y Moi has one of the most storied and diverse discographies in modern music, his earlier work being more electronic and centered around dance music grooves. As his discography progresses you see Moi become more comfortable as a vocalist and introduce more live-instrumentation into his works. This culminated in 2022’s MAHAL, a perfect harmony of Moi’s bass-driven instrumentals and soft-spoken lyrics.
Moi’s face was bedazzled with diamond tears as he serenaded the live audience over a bouncy instrumental. The backing band emulated the energy of the record perfectly and Moi’s tone of voice sounds even better in a live setting. The minimalist hook strings the verses together perfectly and the blue lighting juxtaposes the cheery instrumental but matches the moody tone of the lyrics perfectly.
Toro Y Moi is about to head out on a European tour kicking off in early August before playing a few spots in Australia.
