Famed Motown Songwriter Lamont Dozier Dies at 81

Lamont Dozier of the heralded Motown songwriting trio Holland-Dozier-Holland died yesterday August 9th at age 81 as confirmed by an Instagram post from his son, Lamont Dozier Jr.

The prolific Dozier scored a total of 12 U.S. number ones and worked on some of the most essential albums from the Motown era. He worked on hits from The Supremes, The Temptations, and almost all of Motown’s most famous alumni. Holland-Dozier-Holland was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1988 and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. 

Along with being behind hits like “Where Did My Love Go” and “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)”, Dozier had a prolific solo career releasing eight albums from 1973 including his essential debut Out Here On My Own

Dozier was an integral part of the famous Motown sound and his approach to songwriting has embedded itself into pop culture’s DNA.
