Tones and I is no stranger to the late-night stage, the ever-evolving vocalist made her U.S. TV debut on Fallon back in 2019 with a performance of her hit “Dance Monkey”. Just last year she made an appearance on Colbert where she performed “Cloudy Day” backed by a full children’s choir. Last night (August 9) marked her third appearance on the late-night circuit as she premiered her new single “Charlie” on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Back in 2019 when Tones and I crashed onto the scene with the dance-inspired EP The Kids Are Coming, no one knew the true talent that was behind the impressive debut. Mixing house-style instrumentals with pop-influenced melodies created a fresh sound that communicates with any fan of any genre. She continued her fusion of genres on her 2021 debut LP Welcome To The Mad House, which produced hits like the aforementioned “Cloudy Day”. On her new single “Charlie”, she seems to be going in a new direction.

As soon as guest host Rob McElhenny finished introducing Tones and I, a smooth, subtle bass line kicked in before the plucking of an electric guitar introduced itself. This swelled up to a funk-influenced instrumental from the full band backing Tones and I. Her elastic voice crooned about this Charlie character, which is actually the name of her dog. According to a statement from the frontwoman, the bassline that intros the new single was the first thing written for “Charlie”. Talking about the new single, Tones and I is quoted saying “’ Charlie’ was a song that came out of nowhere, it was done in three hours and we wrote the bass line first. It’s about missing my dog Charlie and other things. It’s a funky jam and I just wanted to have some fun with it.”
