Some summer cinematic events get top billing and Thor certainly warrants it. The latest Thor film to hit theaters around the world is Thor: Love and Thunder, and things have changed a lot over the past few years.
Love and Thunder, which is the fourth part of the Marvel series, comes back with a vengeance, and it sees Thor (Chris Hemsworth) reunited with his old flame Jane Foster (Natalie Portman).
From the first scene which includes a rousing guitar solo, Love and Thunder is a typically rambunctious journey through different worlds, and as with any kind of Marvel film, the battle scenes are truly epic.
Jeff Goldbaum should take some acclaim too for his self-deprecating humor cast as the gold-robed spaced tyrant, and Love and Thunder draws some parallels with Plenty of Rangnorak.
But the biggest challenge Thor has to deal with is overcoming his nemesis, Gorr The God Butcher, played by Christian Bale, who is a psychopath and is intent on wreaking havoc.
Perhaps Gorr The God Butcher isn’t as sadistic or as foreboding as we would expect, especially when he’s jostling with Thor and friends to steal the limelight.
But we shouldn’t undersell what Jane the Foster brings to the party. She is more feisty than ever, and Portman’s comeback is rousing. There are even times where she appears to be vulnerable, but there is something rather endearing about it.
This film builds upon the events of Avengers: Endgame and it shows how Thor and the Guardians, at least in the early stages, can combine well to keep the dark forces at bay.
Marvel films have a beautiful symmetry about them, and the franchise overall has been an overwhelming success. The comic book series which includes Superman, has transcended popular culture, and they remain prevalent to this day.
But the franchise shouldn’t just be measured by the way the comic books and movies have projected themselves; instead, we should look through a wider lens of how Marvel has made its impact on other industries. Marvel has been an inspiration for video games and many of the most popular titles can be played on Xbox and PS5.
