In just over 24 hours Spoon announced a surprise intimate club show and then took the stage to deliver the goods at a sold-out Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn. The band was prepping for their upcoming tour with Interpol and delighted their fans on this hot and muggy Tuesday night (8/23) in Williamsburg.

The entrance music of Gene Vincent’s “Be-Bop-A-Lula” welcomed the Austin, TX band to the tiny Brooklyn stage (which featured a stellar light show) as they kicked off the night celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Kill The Moonlight. The opening trio from that record was the way this pop-up concert started as “Small Stakes” chugged along before the banging electro keys drove a strong “The Way We Get By” and the quirky dance rock of “Something To Look Forward To” rounded out the opening trifecta. Playing an hourlong main set, the band was drum tight as songs flowed into each other and the small venue vibrated with energy.

Two major highlights arrived early as the crowd began bouncing with the slapping drums and snaking riffs of “Got Nuffin” inspiring the group to soar with a dynamic closing crescendo. Even more impressive was the swirling, disco-tinged “Wild” which employed the enchanting light show that backed the small stage with intoxicating sweetness.

“The Underdog” went with a sparse piano and acoustic lead before cool electro key flourishes finished the tune and “The Hardest Cut” rocked the heaviest on the evening, clanging with abandon. The roller rink, all-skate feel of “Lucifer of the Sofa” was pleasant but the plinking piano and bass bumps of “Inside Out” was even better with twinkling lights and sound accents throughout. The alien funk of “Don’t You Evah” briefly grooved before splashing directly into the poppy joy of “Do You” as Spoon wrapped up the main set by returning to Kill The Moonlight with “Jonathan Fisk”.

After a small break, the band returned to extend the night with a robust four-song encore. “The Mystery Zone” kicked things off before the crackling groove of “I Turn My Camera On”. “Feels Alright” flashed huge riffs making the small sweaty club feel large as the band was in full flight before wrapping up the surprise show with a hand-clapping finale of the smoking “Rent I Pay” slamming back and forth to finish.

The fans who managed to squeeze into Baby’s All Right were treated to an amazingly well-executed night of music from Spoon who were not in warm-up mode for their upcoming tour, they were already primed and flying.
