Creating a legacy in rock music is not an easy task, bands come and go and only a select few get to be celebrated for decades after they were introduced to the world. Last night (September 7), one of those bands kicked off their 50th-anniversary tour. 70’s English art rockers Roxy Music were up in Toronto at the Scotiabank Arena to kick off their short yet globetrotting tour in celebration of five decades in music. Despite a one-off show in 2019, this will be the band’s first full tour since 2011 adn features core members Bryan Ferry, Andy Mackay, Phil Manzanera, and Paul Thompson
An alumni of Glide’s list of bands we were shocked to see reunite, Roxy Music surprised us all when they announced this tour. Since their debut in 1972, the glam-rock underdogs have been dazzling fans with their glamorous approach to rock ‘n roll. Despite such a long break from the touring life, the legendary band is still filling up arenas and bringing showmanship to the stage.
The band’s 20-song setlist included all their hits and detailed their discography. They kicked off the show the same way they kicked off their career, performing “Re-Make/Re-Model”, track 1 from their 1972 debut album. What followed was a packed setlist that included hits like “Avalon” and “More Than This” and deep cuts like “Out of the Blue” from their 1974 album Country Life. The band capped the night off with their version of John Lennon’s “Jealous Guy”, a song that lead singer Bryan Ferry recorded a cover of back in 1988.
Roxy Music’s 50th Anniversary Tour ships off to Washington D.C. next for the second of 13 stops on this run. While the list of dates is not long, the band is going around the world including more stops in the states where they will be performing in Austin, San Francisco, and Chicago before heading over to the U.K. for dates in London and Glasgow.
