Nicole Lund with her band lund might be seen as a new artist, but she is not exactly new to the music business. She earned a degree in Music Industries Studies with a concentration in vocal performance. Her vocal instructor is an opera singer, so it’s fair to say that she learned a thing or two about singing.

Despite her formal training and education, two distinct moments changed the trajectory of her life and influenced her pursuit of music. One moment was when her dad snuck her into a Derek Trucks Band show in her hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina. She immediately became a member of the band’s street team and parlayed that into an internship with the band’s manager before becoming the manager’s assistant.

The other life-changing moment came when Lund had her tarot read and drew the Hermit card, which represents exploration and personal growth. After a decade in the music business, she decided it was time for her to create her music.

She is joined on the debut album Right This Time by Dave Yoke (guitar), Brandon Boone (bass), and Isaac Eady (drums). The album was written in collaboration with Brandon Townsend, guitarist Paul Olsen, and Tyler “Falcon” Greenwell, who produced the album.

The album begins with “Paper Tiger” and the guitar in this one definitely sounds like it was born in the Mississippi Delta. The sound is similar to Ghalia Volt with a lot of sustained notes to give the song some space. Lund brings it all together with some powerful and soulful vocals that are sure to hook the listener.

The band does a good job of keeping the listener guessing as to what’s next. “Not Coming Home” is a twangy and heartfelt song that brings First Aid Kit to mind with its mellow melody and beautiful harmony vocals. “Good Advice” is a groovy rocker that draws pretty heavily from the well of soul. It comes through in the funky rhythm and the backing vocals. All the while, the guitar is rooted firmly in rock. It’s pretty difficult to remain still when you hear this one. The album also includes a cover of The Police’s “Bed’s Too Big Without You”. In this version, the guitar part gives the song a fittingly lonesome feel while Lund sings with the sort of ache you’d expect considering the subject. No matter the style of the song, This album showcases the effectiveness of Lund’s vocal training. Her soulful vocals are reminiscent of Susan Tedeschi and the focal point no matter if she sings a rocker or a tender ballad.

Right This Time by lund is a solid collection of songs that highlights the versatility of all the band members. It is an unpredictable and enjoyable ride through soul, Americana, rock, and the blues. It makes for a fitting soundtrack for either a lazy Sunday morning or a moonlit drive.
