LISTEN: The Morning Yells Feat. Sara Watkins Evoke Mystical Campfire Melodies On “My Girls”

The Morning Yells is a Venice, CA-based band fronted by siblings Phil & Laura Stancil (guitar, vocals / bass, vocals), with Trevor Smith on guitar and Jacob Boll on keyboard.  In the dregs of winter, January 2022, the band escaped to a cabin in the mountains of Big Bear to demo ideas for a new record. After driving through a whiteout snowstorm and laying out what few instruments they’d brought, they got to work. Over the next three days, they labored and toiled with their music, and what they came away with was “Moonlight Mountain Bungalow” – 12 songs broken into existence between heavy snowfall and the knells of a nearby church.

“My Girls”, the latest heartfelt stripped-down single from “The Morning Yells”, is an instantly familiar Americana waltz around a mountain campfire. Featuring Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek and Watkins Family Hour on fiddle and driven by the tight blood harmonies only siblings can pull off, “My Girls” has all the makings of your favorite old sing-along you haven’t heard yet. The full album Moonlight Mountain Bungalow will be released on 10/28 via Golden Boy Records.

Phil wrote “My Girls” after the birth of his first daughter Frankie, piecing the song together while singing to her before bed during the first few weeks of her life. Initially, it wasn’t thought of as a Morning Yells song, but as the vibe of Moonlight Mountain Bungalow began to take shape, the song was an obvious fit. Including fiddle from Sara Watkins of Watkins Family Hour and Nickel Creek, the song is an ode to the love for the family despite the comfort that the darker things in life can provide.
